In his fourth attempt to capture a world title, Saint George Groves claimed the vacant WBA Super-middleweight belt following a bruising encounter with Fedor Chudinov, in the chief support to Kell Brook’s similarly bruising liaison with Errol Spence Jnr. under the arc lights of Bramall Lane and 27,000 fight fans.

George Groves earned it the hard way. And he really did earn it, fighting through a broken jaw from the 3rd round onwards, against the icy strength and come-forward aggression of his Russian opponent, finally stopping him on his feet in the middle of a brutal 6th round.

When Chris Eubank Jnr. claimed the IBO Super-middleweight title by overwhelming the underwhelming defending champion Renold Quinlan a couple of weekends ago, it was all pretty super familiar.

The next generation Eubank looked the part as he always has, save for the first half of his 2014 encounter with Billy Joe Saunders, showing flamboyance, movement, accuracy and incredible punch output but, more significantly, reiterated a seeming lack of world-class power.

As 2017 really gets underway, the vapour trail of 2016’s machismo-driven content provision, the lighting up of black mirrors, and heaving cogs of speculation that the world’s best boxer might do battle with the world’s best mixed martial artist has picked up pace.

Up until this week, its all been good harmless fun,but no one really believed that Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor could or would meet in a boxing ring, for numerous reasons. Not least that McGregor is under contract with the UFC and the retired Floyd surely wouldn’t want to return andhit the magical 50 wins by beating an opponent from another sport.

Rather than fight each other, Amir Khan and Kell Brook have been fighting over who can face the most outrageous opponents instead, but signs are that a meeting between the two is at least on the radar for 2017.
