Cotto-Martinez a done deal for June 7th!

It’s finally a done deal; WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) will be defending his title against 33-year-old former three division world champion Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s) on June 7th at Madison Square Garden in New York. The Cotto vs. Martinez is projected by some to be the biggest fight of 2014. I’m not sure that it’ll be the biggest fight of the year, but it’ll definitely be a top five fight as long as they put a decent undercard with it. I’m not holding my breath at that happening.

Fury sees himself easily beat Chisora this Summer

Fury sees himself easily beat Chisora this Summer

Heavyweight Tyson Fury (22-0, 16 KO’s) isn’t worried in the least about the new and improved Dereck Chisora (20-4, 13 KO’s) now that he’s shed 15-20 lbs of fat and is fighting at a leaner and meaner weight for him. Chisora and Fury are heading towards a Summer clash in the UK, which will likely be a WBO heavyweight eliminator bout. Fury feels that he’s going to dominate Chisora just like he did three years ago when they fought in 2011. Fury won the fight by a lopsided 12 round decision over a much fatter 260 lb. Chisora.

Chisora and Fury fought on the same card last night at the Copper Box Arena in London, UK. A heavy-looking Fury dispatched Joey Abell in the 4th round, whereas Chisora battled to a 12 round unanimous over Kevin Johnson. Neither of them looked anywhere near the class of IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko in the skills department.

Khan encouraging his twitter followers to push for Mayweather fight

Showing signs of worry about his status for his proposed May 3rd fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr., Amir Khan is now encouraging his 1.4 million twitter followers to work in his favor to exert pressure on Mayweather Jr. to force him to give him the fight next. Khan did the same tactics to win the twitter/Facebook book in his competition with Marcos Maidana in the poll that Mayweather had created at his promotions website. Khan asked his 1.4 million followers to go to the website and vote for him, and they responded by helping him overcome a huge deficit to defeat Maidana in the poll by a margin of 57% to 43%.

Khan unhappy about having to wait on news about next fight

Khan unhappy about having to wait on news about next fight

Amir Khan isn’t a happy camper right now after waiting for almost a week without hearing anything from the Mayweather camp about his next fight on May 3rd. Khan thought he had earned the right to face Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the ring by virtue of his victory over Marcos Maidana in the Mayweather Promotions poll last week, but Mayweather has gone quiet ever since he announced the poll.

Rumors are circulating around that Mayweather has decided to fight Maidana next regardless of the poll results, and that they want Khan to fight Adrien Broner on the undercard if he’s willing to agree to that.

Provodnikov in a tough situation with no one to fight

Provodnikov in a tough situation with no one to fight

After having been passed over by Top Rank for a big money fight against Manny Pacquiao on April 12th, WBO light welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov (23-2, 16 KO’s) is in a really tough spot in terms of him trying to land a big fight or even an just a halfway interesting fight. Provodnikov’s No.1 challenger Juan Manuel Marquez isn’t interested in fighting him, and feels that it’s not a fight that would be great challenge for him due to Provodnikov having a title that he recently had in his possession.

Provodnikov’s other options is a fight against Brandon Rios, but that’s something that likely won’t happen due to Rios’ suspension. Rios isn’t ranked in the top 15 at 140 any longer, so that’s not an option for Provodnikov.

Mayweather poll vote ends, Khan tops Maidana to get May 3rd fight

Mayweather poll vote ends, Khan tops Maidana to get May 3rd fight

Amir Khan’s many twitter followers have voted him in as Floyd Mayweather Jr’s next opponent on May 3rd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Mayweather poll ended yesterday at his site at Mayweather Promotions, and the final numbers showed Khan winning 57 percent of the vote with 20,105 votes compared to Maidana’s 15,474. You’ve got to give a lot of credit to Khan for doing a good job of encouraging his many followers to go to the Mayweather Promotions website and vote for him in the poll.

There was no official message at the Mayweather Promotions website about Khan now being the guy that Mayweasther will be facing next, but we’ll likely be hearing something from Mayweather himself shortly, unless he changes his mind about wanting to use the poll as his method for selecting his next opponent for his May 3rd fight. I doubt he’ll do that, because having Khan as his next opponent actually works out better for Mayweather than it would if Maidana were his next opponent.

Erislandy Lara challenges Gennady Golovkin

If WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO’s) is still looking for an opponent for his his next fight on April 26th then he might want to consider facing junior middleweight Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s), because the Cuban fighter is very interested in facing him judging by his above challenge. Golovkin still hasn’t found an opponent for his April fight at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Is Mayweather’s Khan-Maidana poll a way of taking heat off of him when he selects Khan as his next opponent?

Is Mayweather's Khan-Maidana poll a way of taking heat off of him when he selects Khan as his next opponent?

While boxing fans have been getting really excited about the poll on Floyd Mayweather’s website Mayweatherpromotions.com that let fans vote for his next opponent on May 3rd in a choice between Amir Khan and Marcos Maidana, this poll is seen as a just a way for Mayweather to take himself out of the target area for criticism from fans when/if he selects Khan as his next opponent.

As you might already know, Mayweather have received a tremendous amount of criticism about the idea floated about him fighting Khan on May 3rd instead of the more deserving WBA welterweight champion Maidana. Fans don’t want Khan to get the fight because he’s lost half of his last four fights, looked bad in all of them, and turned down a fight against Devon Alexander last December that he could have used to to redeem himself.

Pacquiao says he plans on being more aggressive against Bradley

Pacquiao says he plans on being more aggressive against Bradley

(Photo credit: Chris Farina/Top Rank) Manny Pacquiao and Tim Bradley spent most of the time during their small 2-city press tour talking about aggressiveness and the killer instinct. Bradley thinks Pacquiao has lost his killer instinct, and Pacquiao not surprisingly agrees with him and is vowing to bring it back for their fight on April 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“Maybe he’s right,” Pacquiao said in agreeing with Bradley about him losing his killer instinct. “I’m sometimes just too kind and too nice to my opponents in the ring and that’s why you can’t see the aggressiveness and killer instinct. This time around I have to get it back and show I still have it.”

Ruben Guerrero: Khan will be an easy fight for Mayweather

Ruben Guerrero: Khan will be an easy fight for Mayweather

Ruben Guerrero, the father for Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero, decided to chime in on his own thoughts about the proposed Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Amir Khan fight on May 3rd, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ruben doesn’t see Mayweather Jr. as having any problems at all in taking care of Khan. Ruben feels that Mayweather’s boxing skills will enable to make any adjustments he has to in order to beat the 27-year-old Khan, who sees as having a weak chin.

Ruben recently said that Mayweather had run from Robert Guerrero for 12 rounds in their fight last year, and he felt that Mayweather should have stood toe-to-toe with Robert the entire time like he said he was going to do. Well, Ruben doesn’t think Mayweather will run from Khan. He sees him standing directly in front of him i the pocket looking to land shots, because presumably there’s less to fear with Khan than with Guerrero.
