Garcia-Matthysse being talked about for Mayweather vs. Canelo card

matthysse53 A big fight between Lucas Matthysse (34-2, 32 KO’s) and WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (26-0, 16 KO’s) is being talked about as a possible co main event for the Floyd Mayweather Jr. – Saul “Canelo” Alvarez pay per view card on Showtime on September 14th. Steve Kim is reporting that Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is working on putting the Garcia vs. Matthysse fight together for the Mayweather-Canelo card.

Having Garcia and Matthysse on the Mayweather-Canelo fight card would definitely go a long ways towards drawing additional interest in the PPV card; not that it really needed a lot of help. The Mayweather-Canelo fight is so good in itself that really don’t need a whole lot on the undercard to make the card worth the $65 asking price [$75 HD] for fight.

Sergio Martinez says he’d toy with Golovkin for 12 rounds

martinez14 WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) is currently out of action due to a broken hand and an injured left knee. The knee will reportedly require surgery this month to repair the problem. Martinez says he’s interested in facing WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s), but that the fight likely won’t happen until September 2014, according to ESPN.

Martinez won’t be fighting until April of next year, and he’ll likely take a tune-up bout at that time. If he looks good in that fight, then there could be a possible unification match-up against Golovkin for September.

Roach to train Povetkin for Wladimir fight

roach45 roach45 Trainer Freddie Roach will be taking over the reins to train WBA “regular” heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin (26-0, 18 KO’s) for his October 5th fight against IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (60-3, 51 KO’s), according to Steve Kim.

Klitschko and Povetkin will be fighting in the 33-year-old Povetkin’s home country of Russia in Moscow at the Olimpiyskiy. Whether that’ll be any kind of an advantage for Povetkin remains to be seen. Having Roach as his trainer could help Povetkin, because Roach knows about many of Wladimir’s weaknesses in having watched him fight many times in the past.

Povetkin will likely be a huge underdog in this fight no matter who trains him. If nothing else, Roach should be able to give Povetkin enough training advice so that he’ll be competitive.

Golovkin destroys Macklin in 3rd round; Oosthuizen-Gonzales ends in draw

762 762 (Photo credit: Dibella Entertainment) WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) made easy work of Britain’s Matthew Macklin (29-5, 20 KO’s) in stopping him in the 3rd round on Saturday night at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort, in Mashantucket, Connecticut, USA. The end came from a left hand to the midsection that sent Macklin down face first on the canvas.

Macklin then stayed down for the full count. The fight was then stopped by referee Eddie Cotton at 1:24 of the round.

Golovkin methodically beat Macklin down in the three rounds, nailing him with monstrous shots over and over each time he’d catch up to him to land. Macklin started off trying to mix it up with Golovkin in the 1st round, but after getting shook up with a right hand, Macklin got on his bike and moved for the rest of the fight.

Maidana waiting to see what Broner will do – fight him or vacate

broner74 Marcos Maidana (34-3, 31 KO’s) is the mandatory challenger for WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner (27-0, 22 KO’s) and he’s waiting to hear if Broner will choose to fight him or give up his newly won WBA title. Broner is going to have to make a decision soon because he can’t just sit on the title. Maidana doesn’t care either way.

If Broner gives up the title, Maidana will likely face the winner of the Keith Thurman vs. Diego Chaves for the vacant WBA title. If Broner decides he wants to take the risky fight against him, then Maidana is ready and looking forward to fight him.

Broner decisions Malignaggi; Bika tops Periban; Mitchell defeats Banks

broner45499 Adrien Broner (27-0, 22 KO’s) defeated WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-5, 7 KO’s) by a 12 round split decision at the on Saturday night to win his WBA title at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, New York, USA. The judges had it 115-113, 117-111 for Broner, and 115-113 for Malignaggi.

You can make an argument that the fight should have been scored a draw, as Broner did little in the first 5 rounds of the fight other than covering up in the turtle shell defense.

Broner failed to set himself apart from Malignaggi in terms of talent in this fight because he just didn’t work hard enough.

Adrian Broner and Paulie Malignaggi Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) and WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KO’s) both successfully weighed in on Friday for their fight on Showtime Boxing at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Broner weighed in at 146.8 lbs, and Malignaggi weighed in at 146.4.

Not much happened in the stare down, as both fighters jawed back and forth with another. Malignaggi wanted Broner to stare him in the eyes because he kept pointing to his eyes to get Broner to continue staring at him after he turned his head.

Broner looked good at the weight, and he claimed afterwards that he didn’t have to drain himself to make the 147 lb. limit. He said he ate as he always does and he still made the weight. Broner is probably being honest about it because when he was fighting at lightweight, he would rehydrate to close to 147 for his fights, so it makes sense that for him to easily make the 147 lb. limit.

Mikey Garcia could face Rocky Martinez next

garcia55 Mikey Garcia’s promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank says he’s thinking about maybe putting him in with WBO super featherweight champion Roman “Rocky” Martinez (27-1-2, 16 KO’s) in what would be Mikey’s first fight at 130 lbs. It’s a good fight for Arum because it’s a fight that he can sell due to Martinez having a large Puerto Rican fan base and Mikey having a large and still growing Mexican fan base. It’s a good fight for that reason, but it’s not the best fight Arum could make as far as a competitive match-up because Martinez is barely hanging onto his WBO title as it is against the guys he’s been facing.

Arum said in an interview with esnewsreporting.com “I think another Puerto Rican, maybe Rocky Martinez.”

lopez443 Dan Rafael of ESPN thinks former two division world champion Juan Manuel Lopez (33-3, 30 KO’s) is over-the-hill and not the same fighter he once was following his 4th round TKO loss to Mikey Garcia (32-0, 27 KO’s) last Saturday night at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. Juanma was knocked down two times in the process of getting stopped by the 25-year-old Mikey.

Rafael said on his twitter “Juanma has been as exciting as anyone in recent years, but the wars took their toll. He’s all shot now. That is obvious. He’s a shell…amazing that at one time Lopez-Gamboa was really a hot fight, until [Bob] Arum over-marinated it.”
