Mayweather unsure who he’ll fight next in May 2015

(Photo credit: Stephanie Trapp/Mayweather Promotions) WBA welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (47-0, 26 KOs) said before last night that Marcos Maidana (35-5, 31 KOs) would be his 47th victim and that’s exactly what happened with Mayweather using superb footwork to box his way to a 12 round unanimous decision at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

There may not have been as much toe-to-toe action as there was in their first fight in May of this year, but the fight was still quite exciting to watch from start to finish.

After the bout was over, Mayweather was asked repeatedly by media members whether he’ll be fighting Manny Pacquiao or Amir Khan next, but Mayweather didn’t have a clear answer at the time. He says he still needs to think about what direction he wants to go in for his fight in May of 2015.

Angulo in make or break fight against De La Rosa on Mayweather-Maidana 2 card

Angulo in make or break fight against De La Rosa on Mayweather-Maidana 2 card

Alfredo Angulo (22-4, 18 KOs) partially explains away his last two defeats to Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Erislandy Lara by him fighting in the wrong weight class. Angulo, 32, has now moved up to middleweight and he hopes that he’ll be able to restart his career with a victory in his next fight against James De La Rosa (22-2, 13 KOs) on the Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Marcos Maidana 2 fight card on September 13th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Golden Boy Promotions isn’t doing Angulo any favors by matching him against De La Rosa, because this guy is a tough opponent for a fighter coming off the kind of beat down Angulo suffered in his last fight against Canelo.

Deontay Wilder: Stiverne fight will happen in November

#1 WBC unbeaten heavyweight Deontay Wilder (32-0, 32 KOs) feels certain that he’ll be getting a title shot against WBC heavyweight champ Bermane Stiverne (24-1-1, 21 KOs) in the next three months in November. Deontay says that the letters have already been sent out for the fight and that the negotiations are about to start.

Austin Trout battles Daniel Dawson this Friday in Temecula, CA

#7 WBA Austin Trout (26-2, 14 KOs) will be back in the ring this Friday night in an effort to end his 2-fight losing streak. Trout will, 28, will be fighting #15 WBA Daniel Dawson (40-3-1, 26 KOs) at the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, California.

Trout has lost his last couple of fights against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Erislandy Lara, and looked poor in both fights. Trout cannot afford to lose to Dawson without it putting his career in jeopardy.

Losing to Lara and Canelo is nothing for Trout to be ashamed of because those guys are in the top 5 of the 154 pound division. But losing to the 36-year-old Daniel Dawson, who is no relation to former WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson, would do irreparable harm to Trout’s career.

Roach: Sergio Martinez was at his best when Cotto beat him

WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach believes that former WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez was in his prime when Cotto beat him and stopped him in the 10th round last June.

Roach doesn’t seem willing to admit that Martinez had slipped dramatically from the fighter he was in 2010 and before that by the time that Cotto fought him this year.
