We Want Mayweather But We’ll Fight Anybody Says Kenny Porter

We Want Mayweather But We'll Fight Anybody Says Kenny Porter

There shouldn’t be too much longer to wait now for Floyd Mayweather’s announcement regarding his opponent for September 12th and the 49th and supposed “final” fight of his career.

A number of fighters at 147 lb are in the frame, with the charge being arguably led by Britain’s Amir Khan, who will surely jump off a bridge if he ISN’T the man in the opposite corner to Floyd in a couple of month’s time!

The Brit is far and away the most vocal of potential opponents, and has been so for the better part of 2 1/2 years, yet it would be potentially foolish to rule out anybody at 147, including “Showtime” Shawn Porter, who enjoyed a satisfying victory over Ohioan rival and Floyd’s “little bro”, Adrien Broner last month.

Eddie Hearn: “I Rate Keith Thurman, But Kell Brook’s A Better Fighter”

Eddie Hearn: "I Rate Keith Thurman, But Kell Brook's A Better Fighter"

This weekend, IBF 147 lb champion Kell Brook is set to make an announcement regarding his next title defence, with the mooted September 12th date against American brawler Brandon Rios now looking to be in serious jeopardy.

Promoter Eddie Hearn has spoken to iFLtv to suggest it’s now likely that Brook will box in October, and that Rios is unlikely to be the man in the opposite corner, insisting the American’s team don’t want the fight.

“Kell’s been rushed back into camp after the Frankie Gavin fight and the Rios fight is stalling. It’s stalling over a number of reasons, and I don’t think they fancy the fight. I think they know how good Kell Brook is.”

Kell Brook Backs Terry Flanagan / Set To Announce Opponent This Weekend

Following his victory over American Jose Zepeda on Saturday, that saw Manchester’s Terry Flanagan become the first Englishman to win a lightweight world championship, Sheffield’s IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook has spoken out to iFLtv to congratulate him, as well as to promise his own announcement regarding an opponent is imminent.

Brook, who was assisted by Flanagan in the run-up to February’s destruction of Romanian Jo Jo Dan, said of the Manchester fighter, whose win came via Zepeda dislocating his shoulder in the 2nd;

“I’m over the moon for the kid. He were helping me out for the Jo Jo Dan fight. Most of my sparring partners come for a day or two, then we don’t see owt of them. But with Terry it was brilliant work what we done together.”

Carl Frampton: Still Keen On Quigg Fight / Believes He Is The 'A' Side

One of the most sought after fights for the fans, especially in the UK, is the clash between Northern Ireland’s IBF super bantamweight champion Carl Frampton and Bury native and WBA (reg) 122 lb champion Scott Quigg.

Both men go into battle separately this weekend, defending their respective world titles – Quigg fights former Frampton foe Kiko Martinez in Manchester, while Frampton heads to the US for the first time to fight Mexican Alejandro Gonzalez Jr in El Paso, Texas on a PBC on CBS card (ITV in UK).

David Price In ‘Make Or Break’ Fight This Friday

David Price In 'Make Or Break' Fight This Friday

Since two devastating back-to-back knockout losses at the hands of wily old American veteran Tony Thompson in 2013, David Price’s career has been undergoing something of a ‘rebuild’, and Friday night sees the first real test of those efforts to get back on track, when the giant Scouser fights unbeaten German Erkan Teper for the vacant European heavyweight title in Ludwigsburg, Germany.

Speaking of the fight in ‘The Liverpool Echo’ recently, Price knows that defeat will end any chance of ever achieving the lofty heights that many boxing writers and trade insiders had once predicted for him.

Thurman: ‘I Felt Like Mayweather Against Mosley’

Thurman: 'I Felt Like Mayweather Against Mosley'

It would seem that in many corners of the boxing press, people are turning on Florida’s Keith Thurman following his victory Saturday night over veteran southpaw Luis Collazo. Some of the very same people who believed him to be the 2nd coming are now seemingly changing their mind after witnessing “One Time” overcome a scare at the end of the 5th round, that saw the wind knocked out of his sails from a big shot to the body – with Collazo’s assault only halted by the bell.

It was proof of Thurman once again overcoming adversity in a fight – as he did back in March against Robert Guerrero, fighting on and winning with a nasty head injury. On Saturday he did incredibly well to stay on his feet.

Paul Smith Undecided Over Future After Ward Defeat

Paul Smith Undecided Over Future After Ward Defeat

Three weeks ago fans witnessed Britain’s Paul Smith getting bloodied and soundly beaten by the returning Andre Ward in California, turning in a valiant effort despite being thoroughly outclassed by one of the world’s best fighters from the opening bell in their catch-weight contest.

It was Smith’s 3rd loss in as many fights, and 6th overall, following back-to-back world title challenges to Germany’s Arthur Abraham, fights that saw Smith come up short on points both times.

Prospect Watch: Jack Catterall

YouTube video
He is currently one of British boxing’s brightest young up and coming stars, having launched his career to the next level by stopping former Team GB Olympic captain Tom Stalker in 8 rounds last October in Liverpool – and on Saturday night, Chorley’s 22 year old light welterweight Jack Catterall (11-0, 7 ko) looks for his 12th straight professional win when he fights Gabriel Punalef Calpin on the undercard of Terry Flanagan’s world title clash with Jose Zepeda in Manchester.

The talented young fighter was recently selected to join Floyd Mayweather’s camp to provide some southpaw sparring ahead of Floyd’s fight with Manny Pacquiao, and away from the bright lights of Vegas, with his feet back on British soil, Catterall is determined to keep the momentum going with a strong showing on Saturday.

Antonio Tarver Wants To Break Records / Eyes Wilder & Klitschko

He will turn 47 years old in November, yet Antonio ‘Magic Man’ Tarver, the former 175 lb boss many fans best remember for his trilogy of fights with Roy Jones Jr, is set to step between the ropes again at heavyweight in August, when he fights former cruiserweight boss Steve Cunningham on the PBC on Spike card from Newark, New Jersey.

If the Florida man comes through against Cunningham, he has insisted to ThaBoxingVoice that the only fights that make sense for the future would be against the likes of Deontay Wilder, or dominant lineal champion Wladimir Klitschko, who fights Tyson Fury in Germany in October.

Chavez Jr: I Want Ward, GGG or Even Canelo

Chavez Jr: I Want Ward, GGG or Even Canelo

It can’t have been easy being the son of a famous Mexican boxing great and feeling the pressure from a young age to follow in your father’s footsteps and live up to his achievements. I think most people would always feel second best or embark upon a different career choice entirely, yet not Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, who – for all his numerous faults – has attempted (or was forced) to follow the family boxing tradition with mixed results over the years.

Chavez’s ring return comes in 8 days time when he fights Marcos Reyes, and it’s being seen as nothing more than a bounce-back fight for the Mexican former 160 lb champion after he seemingly quit on his stool against Andrzej Fonfara back in April in their 172 lb catch-weight clash.
