Floyd Sr sees no point in Mayweather-Maidana 2 rematch

(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) As far as trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr is concerned there’s really no point in his son WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) fighting Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs) in a rematch this Saturday night because he thinks that Mayweather Jr already clearly beat Maidana last May, and he doesn’t see there being any reason for a rematch.

Floyd Sr. didn’t agree with the fight being scored as a 12 round majority decision obviously. He saw the fight as a definite victory for Mayweather.

Mayweather chose to fight Maidana again because he wanted to show the fans that he could beat him easier the second time around. Mayweather isn’t saying this but he really didn’t have any other interesting options in terms opponents to fight. Amir Khan was unavailable, Shawn Porter suffered a defeat, and Kell Brook and Keith Thurman don’t have big enough names for Mayweather to fight them.

Mayweather: Arum and Pacquiao are mentioning my name to sell tickets to Algieri fight

(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr told the media on Tuesday that there is zero truth to him being in negotiations for a fight against WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao. There are no secret negotiations of any kind. Mayweather feels that Pacquiao and his promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank are mentioning his name in order to try and sell tickets and attract interest for Pacquiao’s November 22nd fight against little known fighter Chris Algieri in Macao, China.

“Not true,” Mayweather said. “I can’t say what the future holds, but Arum and Pacquiao is trying to sell tickets for the (fight with the) guy named (Chris) Algieri. Trying to sell tickets for that fight. I don’t know where they fighting, I don’t know anything about what Top Rank is doing.”

Broner decisions Taylor; Matthysse stops Ortiz; Berto defeats Upsher

Adrien Broner (29-1, 22 KOs) scored a 12th round knockdown in the process of defeating Emmanuel Taylor (18-3, 12 KOs) by a 12 round unanimous decision in his hometown at the U.S Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Taylor was having a good round in the 12th until Broner connected with a left hand to the head that dropped Taylor on his backside on the canvas in the last 15 seconds of the round. Taylor got back to his feet and the fight ended several seconds later. It was a close affair with both guys taking turns landing big shots.

Like in his fight against Marcos Maidana, Broner spent a lot of time on the ropes covering up and trying to land counter shots. This enabled Taylor to tee off on him in many of the rounds. Broner’s defense was sound even when he was backed up against the ropes, but it still didn’t look good with him backed up like that.

Pacquiao: I know how to fight Mayweather

WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KOs) says he knows how to fight WBA/WBC Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs), and how to force him into brawling with him if he were to agree to fight him. Pacquiao says Mayweather is too concerned with protecting his unbeaten record and that’s why he’s not interested in fighting him.

Mayweather is at a point where he really doesn’t need to fight Pacquiao in order to make big money. With him getting the big money for each of his fights on Showtime, it’s almost pointless to fight Pacquiao right now.

The money Mayweather is getting to fight other guys is just too good, and he’s already said that he won’t fight Pacquiao until he leaves Top Rank, which it doesn’t seem like Pacquiao is inclined to do. Pacquiao just re-signed a new 2-year extension that will take him until the end of 2016.

Roach: Danny Garcia is my No.1 choice to face Pacquiao

If trainer Freddie Roach gets his way, Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KOs) will be fighting WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (29-0, 17 KOs) in the near future. Roach says Garcia is someone that he really would like to see fighting Pacquiao, because he thinks his fighting style would be perfect for him. Lately, Roach has been talking more about other fighters facing Pacquiao than the guy he’s facing next in Chris Algieri on 11/22 and that has me wondering what his game is.

Roach notes that Garcia likes to come straight at his opponents swinging for the fences with big shots. This is someone Roach believes Pacquiao would be quite comfortable with in the ring.

Roach: We’re [Pacquiao] doing everything we can to fight Mayweather

Trainer Freddie Roach says that Manny Pacquiao is doing all he can to try and get a fight against WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. Pacquiao has won 2 out of his last 4 fights in beating fellow Top Rank fighters Brandon Rios and Tim Bradley.

Pacquiao is now set to fight light welterweight Chris Algieri on November 22nd. If it wasn’t him, Pacquiao was going to fight Ruslan Provodnikov.

Roach recently said that Pacquiao would take the smaller money and would agree to the blood testing for the fight, which is what caused their initial Mayweather-Pacquiao negotiations to fall apart when they attempted to put a fight together in 2010. Mayweather agreed to a 50-50 deal at that time, but then the negotiations died after he asked for random blood testing to check for performance enhancing drugs.

Mayweather: Nobody’s going to knock me off this throne

WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) says he’s not ready to be knocked off his throne by challenger Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs) in their fight on September 13th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Indeed, Mayweather doesn’t see anyone knocking him off his throne, be it Manny Pacquiao or anyone else.

Mayweather is fighting at a too high of a level and he doesn’t see anyone out there that can pose any problems for him.

“Nobody’s going to knock me off this throne. I’m going to stay at the top and do what I want to, how I want and when I want to,” Mayweather said on All Access: Mayweather vs. Maidana 2. “They think they good. I know I’m great.”

Matt Korobov signs for Quillin fight

#1 IBF Matt Korobov (24-0, 14 KOs) has reportedly inked part of the contract for a title shot against WBO 160 pound champ Peter Quillin (31-0, 22 KOs), according to RingTV. Korobov, 31, signed the contract last Friday.

Korobov is now waiting for the 31-year-old Quillin to sign his part of the contract so the fight can move ahead. The target date for the fight is on November 1st at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Korobov has his flaws in terms of his stamina, but he’s arguably a lot better than the guys that Quillin has been feasting on since he won the WBO title against Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam by beating him by a 12 round decision. Since then, Quillin has been a disappointment to some boxing fans for his choice of opposition.

Roach: Mayweather is shot, but we want Pacquiao to fight him

At Thursday’s media day with Manny Pacquiao at AT&T Park in San Francisco, California, trainer Freddie Roach continued with his mantra that WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr is a shot fighter due to Roach believing that he can’t move around the ring like he used to.

The interesting thing is Roach still wants Pacquiao to fight Mayweather even though Roach sees Mayweather as being shot. If Roach thinks Mayweather is shot, then why does he want Pacquiao to fight him?

“We’ll [Pacquiao] fight Mayweather at whatever weight he wants to fight at,” Roach said via Fightnews at the San Francisco Giants media day. “He’s [Mayweather] shot. He’s done. His legs are gone based on his last two fights. He says he doesn’t move in order to make it more exciting for the fans. Bull [expletive].”

Nonito Donaire vs. Nicholas Walters on October 18th at StubHub Center, Carson, California

WBA Super World featherweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire (33-2, 21 KOs) has decided not to give former WBA champ Simpiwe Vetyeka an immediate rematch like he was talking about after having beaten him by a 5th round technical decision last May to win the WBA title.

Donaire instead will be fighting WBA regular featherweight champ Nicholas “Axe Man” Walters (24-0, 20 KOs) on October 18th at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. The Donaire-Walters fight will be the televised co-feature on HBO on the undercard of the Gennady Golovkin vs. Marco Antonio Rubio fight card.
