Maidana: I hope Mayweather will stand and fight like a man

Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs) met with the media earlier today to talk about his upcoming rematch against WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) next month on September 13th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Maidana took credit for forcing Mayweather Jr to fight off the ropes last May instead of Mayweather electing to do so in order to make it interesting for the boxing fans. Maidana says he forced Mayweather to fight that way, yet in the same interview, Maidana says he wants Mayweather to stand and fight him this time like last time.

Roach: Pacquiao has a way of getting past Algieri’s jab

Roach: Pacquiao has a way of getting past Algieri’s jab

Trainer Freddie Roach recognizes that the bigger and taller Chris Algieri (20-0, 8 KOs) has an excellent jab that will give WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KOs) problems when they face each other on November 22nd in Macao, China. However, Roach feels confident that Pacquiao will be able to get past Algieri’s jab in order for him to land his blistering fast combinations.

“Algieri has a good reach advantage and we’re going to have to get past that and his jab. That will be our biggest problem. We have ways to do that,” Roach said.

Goosen gives Deontay Wilder a good chance of beating Stiverne

Goosen gives Deontay Wilder a good chance of beating Stiverne

Trainer Joe Goosen believes that #1 WBC Deontay Wilder (32-0, 32 KOs) has a good chance of beating WBC heavyweight champion Bermane Stiverne later this year when Deontay faces Stiverne for the WBC title.

Goosen likes Deontay’s right hand and left hook, and he believes that he could get to Stiverne if he sits against the ropes like he did in his recent fights against Chris Arreola. Goosen expects Deontay to be able to land his right hands against Stiverne.

The only thing Goosen doesn’t know is how well Stiverne will be able to take those big shots. He noted that Arreola, who came into the fight with a right arm injury, was able to hurt Stiverne with right hands.

Lucian Bute in action on 12/6 at Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada

Bute, a former IBF super middleweight champion, doesn’t have an opponent for the 12/6 date yet, but his promoters are working on it. Bute, 34, is expected to be facing a high quality fighter.

Bute lost his last fight in January to Jean Pascal by a 12 round unanimous decision. Bute put in a woeful performance in that fight by failing to take the fight to Pascal and let his hands go.

Robert Garcia impressed with Algieri’s talent level

Robert Garcia impressed with Algieri's talent level

Trainer Robert Garcia really likes what he sees in WBO light welterweight champion Chris Algieri (20-0, 8 KOs) in terms of the talent he has. Garcia doesn’t train Algieri, but he’s seen him sparring his fighters and he became a fan of his after that.

Algieri will be facing Freddie Roach trained WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KOs) on November 22nd in Macao, China. Pacquiao will be giving away 3 ½ inches in height against the 5’10” Algieri and close to 6 inches in reach.

Alfredo Angulo not worried about September 13th fight against De La Rosa

(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) 32-year-old Alfredo Angulo (22-4, 18 KOs) feels no pressure whatsoever going into his next fight against James De La Rosa (22-2, 13 KOs) on the September 13th Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Marcos Maidana 2 card at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Angulo isn’t concerned about having been stopped in his last two fights against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Erislandy Lara. Angulo says that he’s not the same fighter who was knocked out in the 10th round by Canelo last March in a fight where Angulo looked incredibly weak.
