The most highly anticipated boxing match of 2016 is just around the corner. On November 19 undefeated light heavyweight world champion Sergey ‘Krusher’ Kovalev (30-0-1) will defend the title against undefeated former super middleweight champion Andre ‘S.O.G.’ Ward (30-0-0). The bout will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, and features two of the best pound for pound fighters in the world, both of whom are in (or very close to being in) their respective absolute primes.

Floyd Mayweather’s first retirement from boxing came after his knockout win against Ricky Hatton in December 2007, when Floyd famously nailed Hatton with a picture perfect check hook. There weren’t many boxing people who believed the retirement was permanent, but it was an official retirement nonetheless. Mayweather would ultimately return to the ring in 2009, and would go on to have 10 fights. He won all 10 of them. How good were these wins, and how did they impact his legacy?
There is always reason for concern whenever a big boxing mega event hinges on one or both fighters needing to win a tune-up match prior to the big showdown. An example of this would be when Roy Jones Jr and Bernard Hopkins were scheduled to have a rematch, as long as they both were victorious in matches leading up to the desired attraction.
