khan11 Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer recently offered his opinion that Amir Khan was faster than Floyd “Money” Mayweather, Jr. Are you buying it? Inside the ring, the truth is that there are two kinds of speed. One is measured and calculating. The other is just plain jittery speed.

The first involves cold blooded focusing. Nothing takes this speedster out of his game plan. He ignores the crowd and the noise. His movements are smooth and for a reason. He doesn’t waste motion. He avoids being duped or a victim of feints. He throws punches with mathematical precision, taking advantage of mistakes and traps, not wasting energy. He always seems to be in control, set and on balance. He makes the difficult look easy. Often he is described with superlatives such as genius, maestro, and poetry in motion. That’s Money.

Who can match Floyd Mayweather for speed? Ricky Hatton says Amir Khan can!

002KhanvsMolinaIMG_5847 British boxing legend and former light-welterweight king Ricky Hatton is one of a few experts who likes the idea of superstar Floyd Mayweather making his next defence against Amir Khan. Hatton, writing in his debut column for The Manchester Evening News, says he feels Khan is one of just a handful of fighters who can match Mayweather for speed.

“Amir deserves his shot against Floyd,” Hatton wrote. “It is a career-defining fight and would be his biggest payday, so he’s definitely got to go for it. Amir lost to Lamont Peterson and then Danny Garcia, but he’d reached the top. He doesn’t need money, he needs a challenge – and you cannot get bigger than Floyd. The one thing that comes to mind with Floyd is his defence. He can attack, but he prefers to defend, sit on the ropes. I can’t remember too many fights where he’s had to go on the front foot and attack.

Cunningham doubts Alexander vs. Khan will happen

alexander434 Yesterday Team Khan came out with a statement saying that the rumors about Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) facing Floyd Mayweather Jr. in May were false and that Khan would be fighting IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander (25-1, 14 KO’s) on December 7th. Alexander’s trainer Kevin Cunningham doesn’t believe the statement from Team Khan, because the Khan-Alexander fight still hasn’t even been negotiated and there’s only 2 months to go before the fight.

Cunningham is saying that if the Khan-Alexander fight isn’t negotiated by October 7th, Alexander won’t take the fight because they want at least 8 weeks to train to get ready. They don’t want to be told at the last minute the fight is happening and end up not ready.

Mayweather’s next opponent still a mystery; Khan fight not happening

floyd432 On Wednesday both Team Khan and Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe said that a fight between former two division world champion Amir Khan and Floyd Mayweather Jr. isn’t happening. According to Dan Rafael, Ellerbe calls it nothing more than rumors that Floyd will be fighting the struggling Khan, and Team Khan is saying that Khan will possibly be fighting IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander on December 7th.

This leaves the question about who Mayweather Jr. will be fighting on May 3rd next year. He’s selected the Cinco de Mayo holiday to fight, so it makes a lot of sense for him to fight a Mexican fighter or least a Hispanic fighter. Unfortunately, there’s not too many names for Mayweather to fight at 140, 147 or 154 if he’s looking to a top Hispanic fighter.

Vivek W. (ESB): I think the pending move to 168lbs will demonstrate that it’s both a curse and a blessing, as all positive effects of this move will be nullified by the reality it brings. When we look at his past fights, Chavez Jr. has shown what some view to be a “very good chin”. But few stop to actually question whether or not this has anything to do with the fact that he’s taking shots from men who are naturally much smaller.

Virgil Hunter: Khan is in for a rude awakening if he fights Mayweather

The latest talk is that former two division world champion Amir Khan may choose to bypass the risky fight against IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander on December 7th in order to sit around until May to get a much bigger money fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Khan’s promoters at Golden Boy Promotions wanted him to fight Alexander in order to give Khan a chance to pick up his IBF 147 lb. title and show boxing fans that he would be a worthy opponent for Mayweather.

Khan’s trainer Virgil Hunter doesn’t know what Khan is going to do, but he feels that he’s going to need to dedicate himself fully to the sport if he wants to beat a talented fighter like Mayweather.

khan#2 - Copy British and Commonwealth Welterweight Champion Frankie Gavin, who aims to secure his Lonsdale belt outright this Saturday (21 September) at The Copper Box Arena when he faces David Barnes, spoke today about rival Amir Khan’s chances in a potential showdown with the pound-for-pound number one fighter Floyd Mayweather Jnr., saying simply “he hasn’t really got any!”

Gavin, Britain’s only ever amateur world champion, was responding to media reports that Khan is a leading contender to become the next opponent for Mayweather, who made light work of his supposed number one threat, Canelo Alverez, last Saturday which was shown live on BoxNation in the UK.

Gavin continued, “Khan is an excellent fighter but Mayweather is definitely a step too far for him, as he is for anyone at the moment.”

Amir Khan gets yet another title shot – is he a worthy contender or a stepping stone in disguise?

002KhanvsMolinaIMG_5847 Amir Khan is slated to fight Devon Alexander for the IBF welterweight title on December 7, 2013. Khan has had nothing but title fights since his first loss at the hands of Breidis Prescott. The only exception was his last fight against Julio Diaz which was a non-title bout that Amir got up from a 4th round knock down to win by UD. That makes of 12 fights for different titles and he won 9 of them.

Amir‘s loss to Prescott came in a lightweight title bout in 2008 via first round KO. It was a deep, heavy fall and it didn’t look like Khan could ever beat Prescott. My view then was that Khan wasn’t made for professional boxing despite his stellar amateur career. He bounced back and moved up to light welterweight to have all those high profile fights.

Unlike other high-profile fighters who have a dedicated fan following, Khan has a bandwagon of nay-sayers and very few fans support him even in his own country. He is someone fans love to hate.

This is an interesting fight, because it’s hard to tell which fighter is actually supposed to be the better one.

Is Amir Khan the young champion coming to retire Mosley? Maybe, but his losses to Peterson and Garcia expose him as nothing more than an average fighter with luck of the draw in the past. Not only do his losses shade his record, but his recent wins as well. His victory over Carlos Molina was solid, but it wasn’t sensational, and of course his barely pulled of win over Julio Diaz makes it seem like Khan at his young age may be over the hill.
