Sullivan Barrera (17-0) and Andre Ward (28-0) are scheduled to fight each other this Saturday at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, Ward’s hometown. Barrera, an ex-Cuban amateur who turned pro in 2009, is the mandatory challenger for Sergey Kovalev’s IBF title but he will fight Ward instead who is rated fourth after one fight at light heavyweight. The Cuban is advertised as an amateur standout but the last time he stood out was back in the year 2000 when he won the World Junior Championship.

However, Ward, 31, is starting to make noises on Twitter saying that Barrera won’t be getting rich off him by getting a fight against him. Ward says there is no contract with Barrera, and he does not have any idea who his next opponent will be for March 26 on HBO.

The way Ward is talking, it’s giving many boxing fans the belief that he does not fancy the idea of fighting Barrera and would prefer another fight. Barrera’s trainer Abel Sanchez doesn’t know who Ward can fight in the light heavyweight division that will make a statement, and he feels that Ward lacks the courage to take on Barrera.

Ward, set for an official debut at 175 lbs as the first of a three-fight deal with HBO that will culminate in a fight with the Russian ‘Krusher’ next Autumn/Fall, is likely to debut at his new weight in February after pulling out of the recent Cotto/Canelo card through injury.

Ward originally claimed the belt in November 2009 with a victory over long-time champion Mikkel Kessler in his opening fight of the Super Six tournament.

“I won the WBA belt for my first world title in 2009 and have defended it six times and it’s been a wonderful ride with the WBA,” Ward said. “Gilberto Mendoza and his team have shown me nothing but respect and I’m looking forward to moving up and hopefully winning the WBA light heavyweight belt.”
