Andrzej Fonfara Stops Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Confident and determined, Andrzej “The Polish Prince” Fonfara (27-3, 16 KOs) spoiled the ring return of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-2-1, 32 KOs) in resounding fashion Saturday night, flooring the former middleweight champion one time en route to a one-sided ninth-round TKO in the main event of SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING live on SHOWTIME.

Fonfara, of Chicago by way of Radon, Poland, dropped Chavez, of Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico, with a wide left hook 50 seconds into the ninth round before a boisterous crowd of 8,636 predominately-Chavez fans at StubHub Center. It was the first time in 52 professional fights that Chavez had hit the canvas from a punch.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr’s career took a major hit tonight with him getting stopped at the end of the 9th round by the big punching light heavyweight contender Andrzej Fonfara (27-3, 16 KOs) in their fight at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. Fighting at a catch-weight of 172 pounds, Chavez Jr. was shockingly dropped the 9th round by Fonfara. Chavez Jr. was really hurt to the extent that he wasn’t going to be able to recover after the round ended. In between rounds, Chavez Jr. quit on his stool instead of coming out for the 10th and taking more punishment.

Fonfara was deducted a point in the 7th for the use of his shoulder. It was kind of a petty foul to be called by the referee Jerry Cantu, but thankfully the point deduction didn’t have any effect on the result of the fight.

Adonis Stevenson vs. Andrzej Fonfara 2 an option for 4/4

While Sergey Kovalev and Jean Pascal are on crash course for a fight on March 14th, WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson (25-1, 21 KOs) could be facing a retread opponent in Andrzej Fonfara (26-3, 15 KOs) on April 4th. This is a fight that Stevenson’s promoter Yvon Michel is thinking of putting together for April.

Stevenson already beat Fonfara last May by a 12 round unanimous decision, so the fight doesn’t really make a heck of a lot of sense. Showtime would be the one that would make the ultimate decision, because the fight will be televised on their network.

Fonfara suffered hand injury in win over Ngumbu

If you were wondering why #6 WBC light heavyweight contender Andrzej Fonfara (26-3, 15 KOs) looked so poor last night in defeating Doudou Ngumbu (33-6, 12 KOs), you have to realize that Fonfara suffered an injury to his right hand in the 4th round of the fight, according to Fightnews.com. From that point on, Fonfara was pretty much stuck using his left hand to do most of his power punching.

Fonfara won the fight by a 10 round unanimous decision by the scores of 98-92, 97-93 and 97-93. Of course, the injury Fonfara sustained doesn’t explain why he looked so bad in the first three rounds of the fight.

That’s something that you have to wonder about because Ngumbu was able to hit Fonfara nearly at will with his power shots, and it was kind of disappointing to see something like that happening when Fonfara had previously been hyped by a lot of boxing fans.

Former light heavyweight world title challenger Andrzej Fonfara (26-3, 15 KOs) defeated Doudou Ngumbu (33-6, 12 KOs) by a workmanlike 10 round unanimous decision tonight in a fight that was a tougher than it should have been for Fonfara at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago. Fonfara was hit cleanly by a lot of Ngumbu’s best power shots in the fight.

The defense definitely wasn’t there tonight for the 6’2” Fonfara, but he was still able to outwork Ngumbu to win by the scores of 98-92, 97-93 and 97-93. The 98-92 score was a way off from the fight that actually took place in the ring. Ngumbu did a lot better than that score.

Ngumbu was hurt in the 5th round from a left hand from Fonfara. In the 10th, Fonfara had his way with a tired Ngumbu in nailing him with a lot of hard power shots.

Fonfara is an unheralded and light punching prize fighter but he has several years of high level amateur experience as a cadet. Amateur boxing usually instills good technique and steady skills through methodical coaching. Fonfara showed resilience and good form which helped him to survive the initial onslaught and stand his ground in the second half of the bout.
