Artur Beterbiev takes on Ezequiel Maderna on 6/4

MONTREAL (May 18, 2016) – Unbeaten light heavyweight contender Artur Beterbiev (9-0, 9 KOs) will battle veteran Argentine Olympian Ezequiel Maderna (23-2, 15 KOs) in a 12-round showdown that headlines Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) live on ESPN and ESPN Deportes Saturday, June 4 from Bell Center in Montreal.

Televised coverage begins at 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT and features an exciting co-main event that sees a pair of undefeated rising contenders enter the ring as Florida’s Bryant Perrella (13-0, 12 KOs) squares-off against Washington, D.C.’s David Grayton (14-0, 10 KOs) in a 10-round welterweight bout. PBC on ESPN returns for the first of seven fight nights between June 4 and August 12 that will feature exciting and competitive battles.

Artur Beterbiev to return after year-long layoff

Russian light-heavyweight Artur Beterbiev, one of the most promising and powerful prospects in boxing today, will return to action on June 4th in his adopted Canada. Sidelined since June of last year due to a serious shoulder injury, Beterbiev, 9-0(9) will face Ezquiel Osvaldo Maderna in Montreal in a fight that will go out live on ESPN’s first fight card of the year.

Beterbiev, a superb amateur, has yet to be extended beyond the 7th-round and impressive stoppage wins over former champion Tarvoris Cloud and Gabriel Campillo really put the 31-year-old on the world stage; this after just a handful of fights.

Beterbiev/Murat Set for Right to Face Kovalev

Undefeated Russian contender Artur Beterbiev (9-0, 9ko) will face German-based Armenian, Karo Murat (27-2-1, 17ko) on the Nov 28 DeGale/Bute bill in Quebec, Canada, in an IBF final eliminator to determine the mandatory challenger to Beterbiev’s countryman and old amateur rival, Sergey Kovalev.

It was initially supposed to be Sullivan Barrera in the opposite corner to Beterbiev, though when the unbeaten Cuban had to pull out after experiencing Visa issues, his friend and teammate, Yunieski Gonzalez – last seen dropping an entertaining, yet debatable decision to Jean Pascal in Canada back in July – was offered the opportunity by the IBF, although it’s transpired he too has passed up the chance in favour of a different – undisclosed – option, paving the way for Murat.

Big-hitting Russian Artur Beterbiev (9-0, 9ko) finally has an opponent for his IBF 175lb final eliminator – number #9 ranked Cuban, Sullivan Barrera (16-0, 11ko), in a fight that will determine the mandatory challenger to Beterbiev’s countryman and IBF, WBA (sup) and WBO light heavyweight champion, Sergey Kovalev.

Beterbiev’s team, including promoter Yvon Michel, recently opted out of facing Kovalev in Russia in November, choosing instead to go the eliminator route, and ostensibly give their man a little more time and experience before getting in with old foe Kovalev, whom incidentally Beterbiev beat twice previously in the amateurs.

Two highly-skilled undefeated knockout artists who have positioned themselves to become potential world champions in their respective divisions are heavyweight Anthony Joshua and light heavyweight Artur Beterbiev.

Joshua (13-0, 13 KOs), the orthodox knockout destroyer from Watford, Hertfordshire is seen as an emerging contender in the heavyweight division. He went 7-0 last year with all of his fights ending in a knockout, most of them in the first round. He defeated veteran countrymen Matt Shelton and Michael Sprott, as well as Denis Bakhtov for the WBC international heavyweight title. Sergey Kovalev v Artur Beterbiev Is a No-Go

It shouldn’t really come as much of a surprise but, Kathy Duva – promoter of WBA/WBO & IBF 175 lb champion Sergey Kovalev – is not going to get her sought-after Thanksgiving dust-up in Moscow between her man and fellow Russian puncher Artur Beterbiev.

Duva had stated after Kovalev battered mandatory challenger Nadjib Mohammedi that she was taking the “Krusher” to Moscow in November, and had approached Beterbiev’s promoter Yvon Michel about the fight.

In an email to Duva yesterday, Michel politely refused Main Events “honest offer” which would have guaranteed the (9-0, 9ko) Beterbiev a career high half million dollar payday, although he refused to rule out the fight possibly happening in the future.

Beterbiev fought Alexander Johnson (16-3) and scored his 9th KO in as many fights on Friday night at the UCI Pavilion in Chicago. Johnson, a southpaw with agreeable boxing skills, had a height and a reach advantage over the Russian icebreaker and lasted longer than the previous victims. The American was never really in contention but he gave it a try. Beterbiev’s total boxing made Johnson look as if he was in a different sport. The southpaw stance did not help him; in fact it facilitated Beterbiev’s lead right hands.

Professional boxing returned to network television Saturday afternoon when WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson successfully defended his title with a unanimous decision victory over Sakio Bika. But the most eye-raising performance on the card, which was televised by CBS, came from up-and-coming brutal powerhouse Artur Beterbiev, who destroyed Gabriel Campillo in the fourth round of their contest. It was an explosive display of power from Beterbiev, who is quickly making a name for himself as a devastating force to be reckoned with.

With the impressive win, Beterbiev’s stock has risen, and it brings the potential prospects of a bout between him and former amateur foe Sergey Kovalev one step closer to possibly becoming a reality in the distant, but not too distant future.

Artur Beterbiev scored his 8th KO in as many fights last night when he calmly brutalized former champion Gabriel Campillo knocking him out in a spectacular fashion in round 4. A short right hand by Beterbiev sprawled Campillo against the ropes and the Russian swiped a left hook through the jaw of his opponent who was probably out even before the last shot landed. Beterbiev could probably have made it a three punch combo but he showed a flair for the dramatic and some compassion. In what could be described as a theatrical gesture he did not even pause to check the effect of the combo and threw the last shot as if he was just passing by in a hurry. When the left hook landed, he turned in the same motion and walked away before Campillo hit the floor. No count was necessary and the terrified Campillo team jumped into the ring followed by the ringside physician.
