Carl Froch-George Groves WBA/IBF title fight confirmed for later this year; date and venue to be announced soon

Georges_Groves It’s official: Carl Froch will defend his WBA and IBF super-middleweight titles against unbeaten countryman George Groves later this year at a venue in the UK to be determined soon. The exact date is also TBA but both men appeared live on Sky Sports News at 12 noon UK time today, to talk about the fight.

Froch, unable he said to get rematches with Mikkel Kessler and Andre Ward right now, is excited about giving the UK fans a domestic fight that will contest two major world titles.

“I think this fight is a real treat for the fans,” Froch said. “Some people have said George Groves is not in the same class as me, but there is no danger of me underestimating him. I will take this fight very, very seriously and will bring my A-game as I always do. Groves has done everything asked of him and Eddie Hearn has done a great job getting him the mandatory position. I will prepare like I’m fighting one of the best fighters in the world.

froch11 froch11 Carl Froch(31-2,22ko’s), Britain’s pound for pound number one is currently riding the crest of a wave. His win over Mikkel Kessler(46-3,35ko’s) catapulted him into the general public’s attention and has solidified him as being one of Britain’s greatest and most entertaining fighters. Had Froch had the publicity earlier on in his career as Amir Khan had and the likes of Luke Campbell and Anthony Joshua are now obtaining, who knows how much of a star the Nottingham man may have become.

As it is however, Carl has finally reached the top and is now bankable box office draw. The question is though, is Carl Froch, and can he ever become, a modern day great. In years to come will he be remembered as fondly as the likes of Eubank, Benn, Lewis, Hatton and Calzaghe.

Froch undecided about facing Groves

froch966 The IBF has ordered IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch to defend his IBF title against his mandatory challenger George Groves next, and Froch is debating whether that’s the best direction to take with his career or not. He’s in a position where he can get bigger fights, but he also doesn’t like the idea of losing his IBF title if he chooses not to face Groves next.

That’s what would happen. Froch would either get stripped of his title by the International Boxing Federation sanctioning body or he’s have to vacate if he decided he want to face Groves.

Carl Froch vs. George Groves possible for late 2013

froch305 On Monday, the International Boxing Federation ordered IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (31-2, 22 KO’s) to start negotiations to defend his IBF title against mandatory challenger George Groves (19-0, 15 KO’s). The IBF gave a firm deadline by July 12th for Froch and Groves to come to an agreement for the fight unless he wants to lose his title by having it stripped from him.

Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn appears to be open to the idea of Froch facing Groves this year. After all, Hearn promotes both fighters so it’s an easy fight to make, and it’s one that he’s very interested in putting together. It could be the passing of the baton between the 35-year-old Froch and the 25-year-old Groves.

Hearn wants to match Froch v Golovkin at 168 in 2014

golovkin888 WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s 3rd round destruction of the UK’s Matthew Macklin last Saturday night has Eddie Hearn, the promoter for IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch, highly interested in staging a fight between Froch and Golovkin in 2014.

Hearn thinks he can put the fight together by mid-year in 2014 if everything goes right. There wouldn’t be a catch-weight it seems, as Hearn wants Golovkin to come up to 168 for the fight.

Hearn said to Sky Sports, “Golovkin is a freak of nature; he’s a beast. According to HBO he’d be willing to step up to super middleweight and a fight with Carl Froch would be just epic.

froch92 froch92 Carl “The Cobra” Froch has been sounding a lot like Floyd ”Money” Mayweather in the days following his huge payback win over Mikkel Kessler, which was broadcast by HBO in the United States, and Sky Sports PPV live from the O2 Arena in London, England. In so many words, Carl Froch and his promoter Eddie Hearn are saying, “all roads lead to Carl Froch”. Like Floyd as well, he says he has 3 or 4 major fights before he calls it a day.

All jokes aside he does have plenty of option on the table. One is the rubber match with Mikkel Kessler. Another is a resume booster with a Bernard Hopkins fights. A Rematch with the winner of Jean Pascal vs. Lucian Bute Fight would be a good business move. And last but not least a revenge opportunity with Andre Ward.

ward445 ward445 If IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch chooses to face Andre Ward in his next fight, he believes he now holds the knowledge of how to beat him this time. Froch’s plan involves him coming on late in the fight when Ward tends to tire out a bit and win by outworking him.

Froch said to the guaradian.co.uk “If we fight again, I know what to do. Late on, he tires. At super middle, he struggles…he’s got to come here.”

Well, Froch won’t ever get to test his theory if he never faces Ward again and right now the rematch between them will likely not happen. Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn appears more interested in putting Froch back in with Mikkel Kessler again for a third fight.

froch644 Froch dominated Kessler, and will again if they have a third fight. Kessler’s style is too predictable and not busy enough. He lost because he failed to manage distance very well. He failed to take advantage of his hand speed and straighter punches. Ward did not and will not make those mistakes.

Froch got away with his unorthodoxy, because (to use a baseball phrase), Kessler failed to keep his eye on the ball. Froch hardly ever makes that mistake, and Ward never does. He is always focused, and ready to take advantage of miistakes at an instant. Froch gets away with throwing looping shots, because someone like Kessler’s defense is too simple. He either tries to block the punch, and many times unsuccessfully, or duck under it.

Forget a Ward-Froch Rematch! Bring on Hopkins-Froch!

Bernard Hopkins vs Carl Froch Carl Froch represents everything that fans typically admire in a boxer. He can fight, he can punch, he can take a hell of shot, he can brawl, he is not afraid to let his hands go, and his fights are usually of a very entertaining variety. Additionally, he is a proven warrior who consistently challenges himself against the very best in the world. He is, quite literally, ready to fight anyone anywhere. The Cobra is also an extremely dedicated and incredibly well conditioned athlete. Most importantly perhaps, however, he always gives it absolutely everything he has. All of this was on full display when Froch defeated Mikkel Kessler by unanimous decision, reversing the outcome from their first bout three years ago when Kessler beat Froch in Group Stage 2 of the Super Six Boxing Classic. Just like last time, Kessler and Froch once again both put on an amazing show, with each combatant exhibiting good punching power, a solid chin, and tremendous courage amid heated back and forth action. Froch steadily outworked Kessler over the long haul and was able to control a lot of the activity with his effective rangy jab. Carl and Mikkel have now won one apiece, each man holding a victory on his home turf, and each man having once traveled to the other’s backyard.

Ward open to fighting Froch in the UK

Ward said to HBO: “At this point in my career I’m open to any fight that makes sense. A rematch makes sense. I don’t know if it’s going to be in the UK or the United States, but Froch’s promoter needs to show how bad he wants it. He [Froch] has a big fan base here, but he has to understand that I don’t have to come here. If I come here it’s because I want to reward the UK fans. He’s come off two big wins over Lucian Bute and Mikkel Kessler.
