Golovkin vs. Geale & Perez vs. Jennings weights

(Photo credit: HBO/Will Hart) At today’s weigh-in, WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO’s) scaled in at 159.8 pounds for his fight against former IBF/WBA middleweight champ Daniel Geale (30-2, 16 KO’s) for Saturday night. Geale, who looked pale and not particularly defined, weighed in at 159.2. Golovkin looked ripped up in comparison, and showed a lot more definition than the Australian fighter.

The fight card will be taking place at Madison Square Garden in New York, and Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions expects a crowd of around 7,000 for the 18,200 seat arena. If this was a fight involving New York favorite Miguel Cotto, MSG would no doubt sellout, but Golovkin is from Kazakhstan and he lives in Germany. You can’t expect him or the Australian Geale to sellout the Garden.

Gennady Golovkin was built on HBO’s “Boxing After Dark” and has become just that, bad. Golovkin has already passed the eye test now he will encounter a new style test versus Daniel Geale from historic Madison Square Garden in New York City broadcasted live on HBO Championship Boxing.

Majority of talk inside the boxing world leading up to this matchup has been more about what’s next for “Triple G”. The round in which Golovkin stops Geale seems to be the only item up for debate. Does Geale have enough skill and sturdy enough chin to end the string of knockouts which currently stands at 16 in a row? WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KOs) will be facing the biggest name of his career this Saturday night in defending his WBA title against former world champion Daniel Geale (30-2, 16 KOs) at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Golovkin has been interested in getting the big names to fight him for many years, but this is the best that he’s been able to get after 7 years as a pro. Golovkin hopes that a big win over Geale will be a springboard for him to get bigger fights against the other middleweight champions or possibly against one of the big junior middleweight names such as Saul “Canelo” Alvarez or Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Daniel Geale vs. Garth Wood on February 19th in Sydney, Australia

geale3 geale3 Former IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale (29-2, 15 KO’s) will be facing 35-year-old fringe contender Garth Wood (12-3-1, 8 KO’s) on February 19th in an all-Australia clash in Sydney, at the Entertainment Centre. This is Geale’s first fight since his 12 round split decision defeat at the hands of Darren Barker last year in August. Geale has been sitting idle looking for a fight, and this is what he found.

Geale, 32, is interested in fighting WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin for his title in April, but that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen because HBO reportedly isn’t interested in that fight. It’s not surprising that HBO doesn’t want to put on Geale-Golovkin, because Geale hasn’t done anything since his loss to Barker. Fighting #13 WBA, Wood isn’t then type of fight that will redeem Geale in any way, shape or form. It’s just a fight that will make money for Geale in Australia, and nothing more than that.

Recap: Barker unseats Geale

barker333 Fans were treated to a great night of boxing on HBO on Saturday as “Dazzling” Darren Barker wrestled the IBF Middleweight title from former champion Daniel “Real Deal” Geale. Most ringside observers and fans, (not including HBO’s unofficial scorer and boxing judge Barbara Perez), had the fight scored extremely close, as each fighter gave as much as they took in this nip and tuck affair.

Geale predictably had a strong beginning to the fight and controlled the pace and distance. As the fight progressed, Barker came to life by manufacturing a body assault in an attempt to reduce Geale’s output. By the fourth round Barker appeared to have flashes of momentum, but suffered a cut above his eye and some bruising for his troubles.
