001 Berto vs Soto Karass IMG_1079 Kevin O. (Aventura, FL): Is it safe to say that Andre Berto is now done as a fighter? He has changed trainers and I don’t know of a way that any one out there can rebuild him at this stage to make him a top contender. What are your thoughts?

Vivek W. (ESB): I’ve been asked this question by almost every fight fan that I know and to be very truthful, it’s a very easy question to answer. For starters, when people ask me should he retire? I can address that one very easily in saying “NO”. There are several fighters around the sport who one can argue should, but the reason that I argue he should not is because he has a ton of heart, which means win, lose, or draw, he will make for competitive fights. Fight fans want to see competitive fights. You may enter that competitive fight knowing what the outcome is when he’s facing a perennial contender, but you know that he has just enough ability to land his shots and make it interesting before he ultimately gets bust up in the face and takes an “L”.

Rightly so, Pacman was the one beating black and blue Juan Manuel Marquez into submission when the miracle blow suddenly hit the entire arena into shock during the quadrilogy. If not for the “lucky” punch, another round and Marquez would be out. The bloodied and bruised Marquez, gasping for breath, appeared to be the over the hill boxer in that bout had it not for the seer that hypnotized Pacquiao to fall twice.

Floyd: I’ll fight Pacquiao if he signs with Mayweather Promotions

pac3 pac3 Floyd Mayweather Jr. is no longer setting a condition that Manny Pacquiao turn his career around before he’ll fight him. That was what Mayweather Jr. had previously asked for Pacquiao to do before he’d agree to fight, given that Pacquiao has lost his last two fights.

Mayweather Jr. now wants Pacquiao to sign with Mayweather Promotions before he’ll agree to fight him. Pacquiao currently is signed with Top Rank though 2014.

Mayweather Jr. said to Yahoo Sports “I’m just letting you know that he’s not getting a fight with me. The only way he’s getting a fight with me is if he signs with Mayweather Promotions. He’s got to give me fights with Mayweather Promotions. If he don’t give me no fights under Mayweather Promotions, then he’s not getting the fight. That’s how it’s working now.”

Schaefer thinks Mayweather-Canelo will break PPV record

can44343312351312 Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer sees the September 14th Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fight card as having a great shot at beating the 6-year old PPV mark of 2.4 million buys set by Mayweather himself against the original “Golden Boy” Oscar De La Hoya in 2007 near the end of Oscar’s career.

Shaefer took a step in the right direction to break the PPV record with the addition of Lucas Matthysse vs. Danny Garcia to the fight card earlier today. That’s going to help but I’m not sure if it’s going to help enough.

Martirosyan, 27, thinks he can out-box and stop Canelo, who he hears has problems in dealing with boxers in sparring sessions.

Martirosyan said to esnewsreporting “yeah, I would want to fight the winner. I’ll take the loser too. I’ve heard in sparring he’s [Canelo] not good with boxers. I’m a boxer/puncher. If I catch him, I’ll hurt him. He’s going to get his a** schooled. Mayweather’s going to bring him back to reality. I think Mayweather by decision or knockout. Canelo’s a strong fighter, but I think Mayweather’s too smart.”

Roach: Mayweather beats Canelo by decision

floyd1111 Freddie Roach doesn’t see the upcoming September 14th fight between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) and Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) as being an exciting fight that boxing fans that like action will be pleased with. Instead, Roach sees Mayweather beating Canelo by a decision that is more of a boxing match than a back and forth slugging affair that interests fans.

Roach said in an interview with esnewsreporting.com “I think it’s a very, very good boxing match. It’s not a great fight. I think Mayweather is a beautiful boxer and Mayweather will win a decision in that fight. But people who like action will fall asleep.”

I’ve never subscribed to the fact that Mayweather has ducked or dodged opponents in the past. For every time someone has mentioned this, one merely has to look at Mike Tyson not fighting Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield at times in his career. We can look at the fact that Ray Leonard ignored Aaron Pryor’s and Mike McCallum’s pleas for fights many years ago.

Mayweather has fought Miguel Cotto (a guy he allegedly ducked in the past), Shane Mosley, Juan Manuel Marquez, and Robert Guerrero in four of his previous five fights. Guerrero was a hot fighter who had gone 15 fights without a loss. He was also a six-time world champion in four different weight classes.

Floyd Mayweather (Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) says he won’t be overlooking the 22-year-old WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) in their fight on September 14th despite Canelo being on 22-years-old and not nearly as experienced as Mayweather Jr. as far as important fights go. Mayweather Jr. says he’s taking this fight very seriously and he plans on winning it and then moving onto his last four fights of his 6-fight contract with Showtime/CBS.

Mayweather Jr. said to ESPN in explaining the keys to beating Canelo, “I have to out there and be smart, listen to my father and be the best Floyd Mayweather I can be. He’s [Canelo] young, strong and he wants the #1 spot.
