Golovkin already thinking about what next after Canelo fight; still wants “all the middleweight belts”

It’s arguably the biggest fight of the year, and after the smoke has cleared from the world middleweight title showdown between champ Gennady Golovkin and Saul Canelo Alvarez, the winner will be entitled to not only pound-for-pound bragging rights, but also a nice break from what could well be a tough, tough fight.

At age 35, GGG could even look at closing out the remainder of his career having finally won his defining fight. But Golovkin, who may or may not have shown signs of decline due to age in his fight with Danny Jacobs, is already looking at his next move after September 16. As fans know, Canelo can exercise a rematch clause for an immediate return should he lose for just the second time in his pro career in September, but GGG has no such luxury.

Golovkin says Canelo was “terrible” in Chavez Jr. fight; “Why couldn't he knock him out!”

Middleweight king Gennady Golovkin wasn’t at all impressed with his upcoming rival, Canelo Alvarez, in the Mexican’s disappointing fight with Julio Cesar Chavez Junior. As fans know, Canelo pitched a shutout over an extremely reluctant Chavez, but Triple-G, in speaking with TMZ Sports, was still critical over Canelo’s inability to get the stoppage.

“He looks terrible. It was very interesting for me – why couldn’t he stop him, knock him out? He must [get the KO],” GGG said. “Please, if he has so much energy (having opted to stand between rounds) then show me in the next round! That was fake, him trying to show big muscles for the women (laughs).”

Golovkin-Canelo: Will it be Hagler-Hearns or Hagler-Duran; or somewhere in between?

Golovkin-Canelo: Will it be Hagler-Hearns or Hagler-Duran; or somewhere in between?

Envoking as it has, the great superfights of the 1980s, when The Four Kings – Leonard, Hearns, Duran and Hagler – led the way, this September’s Gennady Golovkin-Canelo Alvarez clash has one enormous load of expectation attached to it. Perhaps too much for the middleweight title showdown to possibly deliver?

We’ve seen “can’t miss” classics fizzle out before our very eyes a number of times; far more so than we’ve been treated to what we always want from a fight:blood, guts, knockdowns and or trading and finally a KO. But what will we get when GGG and Canelo collide?

Left-Hook Lounge Mailbag: Featuring Canelo, Golovkin, & Deontay Wilder!

Roberto Y. (Chicago, IL): I didn’t expect Canelo to finally take the fight with Golovkin, and I’m actually very shocked that he did. Now that a date is set, can you share your thoughts on this fight and who has the best chance to win?

Vito W. (ESB): I think this fight is incredibly great for Boxing. In an era of the sport where mega fights don’t always live up to the hype, I think this is one of those bouts that you can firmly etch in stone as a candidate for “Fight of the Year” and never think twice. These two gladiators leave it all in the ring, and they never disappoint. Whether you like them or not, you have to respect the both in such a manner. Taking a glance at both men, I think there are strengths and weaknesses to be derailed and explored. Beyond that, you have the typical stuff to contend with between the two of them as well, such as size dynamics. One thing I noticed when Golovkin got in the ring after the Chavez Jr bout was how much bigger Golovkin is than Canelo.

Golovkin vs Canelo Is Official At Last!!

Golovkin vs Canelo Is Official At Last!!

From a dud comes an explosion of an announcement: GGG-Canelo is official at last!

Though yesterday’s heavily hyped “Battle of Mexico” showdown between Canelo Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Junior failed to deliver the great fight we were hoping for – the one-sided nature of Canelo’s performance and the perceived poor effort of Chavez Jr. forcing the fans in attendance to boo frequently – fans did not leave the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas totally unhappy.
