Price and Fury move closer to title contention with solid wins

Last night British heavyweights David Price and Hughie Fury put in some great work in winning their bouts to inch closer to the coveted title contention locations.

David Price beat Irineu Beato Costa Junior via a sixth round TKO. Like Price, he had 2 losses on his record and was a decent fighter, but at the end of the day this is part of the rebuilding for Price and was a fight he was supposed to win. In 2012, Price was in a great place. He had just stopped domestic heavyweights Audley Harrison and Matt Skelton in a combined 3 rounds to defend his British and Commonwealth straps and was looking for an entry into the top of the world scene. Two back to back KO losses to Tony Thompson and he was back at the bottom and seemed to have nowhere to go. He decided to go through the slow process of rebuilding his reputation and in 2014 banked away three decent wins to start this process.

By Peter Fury (courtesy of Hennessy Sports): Family. It’s the most important thing to me, it’s life’s beating heart, and it means more than all the world titles a fighter can win.

Today the Fury family grows stronger as my brother, John, is released from prison following a four-and-a-half year sentence. It’s a happy day, a cause for celebration, and I’m just glad we get to have him home. It gives us the chance to put all of this misery behind us. Now we can concentrate on the boxing.

We’re taking this afternoon off and we’ll go out for a meal to celebrate his release. Then we’ll be back in the gym this evening and there’ll be sparring. John will be right in the mix and it will be like he never went away.

Bout with Andriy Rudenko could make top prospect of Hughie Fury

So far in the 2 year professional career of Hugie Fury (14-0-0 8KO) he has largely been overlooked in favour of the other top British heavyweights, however that could change this month when Fury takes on Andriy Rudenko (24-1-0 16KO).

Whilst I wouldn’t rate Rudenko as a top 25 heavyweight myself, he is a very good test for the young fighter Fury. Actually in most eyes he will be the favourite going into this fight which would mean a big boost in Hughies stock should he come out victorious.

BritishBoxers.co.uk caught up with the enjoyable and entertaining Tyson Fury; the young man who is clearly working hard, thinking about his future, and is learning to have fun with the media. Tyson admits to hating press conferences, “Being lucky” in every single one of his fights, having limited skills, being scared of Dereck Chisora, and to simply “being in it for the money”. He even attributes his wins to a mysterious Gypsy Curse. And if you believe any of it, I’ve got some magic beans I want to sell you.

Tyson talks candidly (does he know any other way?) about Wladimir Klitschko not wanting to spar him, Deontay Wilder being more deserving of a world title shot than himself, and says he is up for a fight with David Haye despite a fight between the pair already falling through twice before.

Could the Fury cousins be poised to succeed the Brothers Klitschko as the dominant force in world heavyweight boxing, for the remainder of this decade?

Twenty five year old Tyson Fury is unbeaten in 21 and has already won a brace of world title eliminators yet many knowledgeable minds are selecting his 19 year old relative Hughie as his biggest threat to heavyweight hegemony.

A World Youth gold medallist in 2012, the lad they call ‘Fists of Fury’ racked up a dozen wins (seven stoppages) in his first 33 weeks as a paid prizefighter.

But unlike his gregarious cousin, young Hughie has been content to serve his apprenticeship off TV, deep into undercards and often on foreign climes. Already he has graced professional rings in six separate countries.

Big-hitting Copper Box arena news! Tyson Fury and cousin Hughie added to the show

Promoter Frank Warren announced today that he has agreed a deal with Tyson Fury’s team, represented by Mick Hennessy, for the undefeated heavyweight sensation to fight on the multi-title Copper Box Arena show on Saturday 15th February, live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 546).

Fury will feature in an International Heavyweight contest against an opponent to be confirmed, while his big rival Dereck Chisora headlines the action-packed card defending his European Heavyweight title against undefeated and hard-hitting Ukrainian Andriy Rudenko.

If both men emerge victorious at the Copper Box Arena in their fights then it will set up a deal between the two camps for a joint promotion for the long awaited rematch between the two big men – Fury defeated Chisora on points in July 2011 to take his British and Commonwealth belts and undefeated record – that Warren says could happen in June at a football stadium in a huge summer showdown.

Meeting The Fury Family

fury565 fury565 It was in January of 2013 that I first met the Fury family. I’d just beaten the snow out of the UK by twelve hours and was sitting in a freezing Dutch ferry terminal waiting for a lift from Peter Fury – a man I’d never met – to spend a week in the famous Fury training camp in Belgium. The Ferry ride had been tortuous; high seas and an even higher crew had meant a sleepless night and much paranoia. I was the first writer or journalist to ever set foot in the remote Fury HQ. It was a land few had even considered. Rumours of the harshness of the camp had reached my ears, but there was little in the way of facts. I had to see for myself, for good or ill. Two and a half months later, Tyson Fury would bamboozle the American press, beat Steve Cunningham without Peter in his corner, and sing to a bemused Madison Square Garden crowd. I wasn’t to blame.

Hughie Fury fights Shane McPhilbin on September 14th

fury564534 In something of a slight step up in competition, highly hyped heavyweight Hughie Fury (8-0, 5 KO’s) will be fighting cruiserweight Shane McPhilbin (8-7-1, 5 KO’s) next month on September 14th at the Magna Centre, Rotherhan, Yorkshire.

Hughie, 18, the cousin of unbeaten heavyweight contender Tyson Fury, has been very busy since turning pro in March of this year. Hughie has squeezed in 8 fights in four months, albeit against weak opposition. McPhilbin will continue of this type of match-making, but he’s clearly step up from Hughie’s last two opponents Moses Matovu (4-29-4) and Ivica Perkovic (19-21, 14 KO’s).

Fury: Hughie is ready to fight David Price in September; he’d beat him

fury564534 After watching heavyweight David Price (15-2, 13 KO’s) gas out and get stopped in the 5th round last Saturday night by Tony Thompson (38-3, 26 KO’s), undefeated Tyson Fury thinks his cousin 18-year-old Hughie Fury (6-0, 4 KO’s) has the skills and the power to defeat Price if he’s open to fighting the 6’6’ Hughie in September. It’s unclear how serious the offer is from Fury, but if it’s a serious one it would be a tremendous test for the inexperienced Hughie.

Tyson Fury said on his social media site: “@hughiefury is ready for Price in September. Hughie would do Price.”
