Reports say Kubrat Pulev is injured, fight with Anthony Joshua in serious jeopardy

Just days after a big heavyweight title fight between WBC champ Deontay Wilder and Luis Ortiz fell through, a second world title clash in the sport’s glamour division is also said to be in serious jeopardy. According to various reports, Bulgaria’s IBF mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev is injured and his October 28 challenge of IBF/WBA heavyweight ruler Anthony Joshua will have to be postponed as a result.

Is IBF mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev a genuine threat to IBF/WBA heavyweight champ Anthony Joshua? In actuality, yes he is, as ANY heavyweight who can punch is a threat to any other big man of the sport; but most experts and fans see the October 28 fight as a win for AJ.

One person who naturally disagrees is Pulev’s promoter Kalle Sauerland, who tells Sky Sports how any young champion who is “learning on the job,” as is the case with Joshua, shouldn’t be messing around with his experienced fighter. Sauerland says Joshua has flaws and that Pulev will be looking to exploit them next month.

Ali-Spinks II, the fight that saw “The Greatest” make history as the only man to have won the world heavyweight crown three times, took place at The Superdome in New Orleans and an incredible 63,315 fans paid to attend. But next month’s Anthony Joshua-Kubrat Pulev fight is on target to smash that record.

With the majority of fans pretty much expecting IBF/WBA heavyweight champ Anthony Joshua to win in commanding fashion when he meets Kubrat Pulev in Cardiff on October 28, the event is in need of a solid under-card. And one is currently shaping up.

Confirmed now are three title fights: Kal Yafai will defend his WBA super-flyweight title against Sho Ishida, Frank Buglioni and Callum Johnson will clash with both the British and Commonwealth light-heavyweight titles on the line, and at heavyweight, Lenroy Thomas and David Allen will clash in a rematch of the fight they had in May on the Spence-Brook card.

Joshua, the WBA and IBF ruler, has been ordered to defend the former against Cuban Luis Ortiz, and he has been ordered to defend the latter against Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev.

Thank goodness for a Plan-B. Now that former heavyweight king Wladimir Klitschko has retired, thus forever ending any talk of a rematch with Anthony Joshua, AJ is looking at his next fight. And Eddie Hearn, in speaking with Sky Sports, said a fight between AJ and his IBF mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev is already in place.

Though glitzy Las Vegas is almost certainly out – Joshua-Pulev having nothing of the Big Fight factor to it that Joshua-Klitschko II had – it’s good that Joshua will not have to waste time searching for a replacement challenger.
