Peterson outscores Diaz for split decision victory

In an entertaining 12-round scrap, hometown favorite Lamont Peterson (now 34-3-1, 17 KOs) edged out a majority decision over previously undefeated Olympic gold medalist Felix Diaz (now 17-1, 8 KOs) from EagleBank Arena at George Mason University. Peterson and Diaz stood and exchanged shots toe-to-toe for long periods, bringing the crowd into a frenzy time-after-time. Peterson pressed the action for the majority of the fight, stalking the smaller Diaz to the ropes. Diaz was the busier of the two, countering and flurrying effectively. Sensing he needed a knockout to win, Diaz came out in the 12th and final round with a sense of urgency, taking the fight right to Peterson. In the end it was too little too late though, as Peterson was awarded the majority decision by scores of 114-114, 117-111, 116-112.

Subjective scoring and controversy in boxing

Professional boxing is a sport unlike any other. It is not scored by the passing of a ball through a net, nor the time it takes someone to cross a finishing line. Whilst there are objective mechanics in boxing, as in the case of a KO or foul, the majority of fights are scored by three judges placed at different points around the ring, who proceed to use a series of criteria to determine which fighter should be awarded the round. The scoring of rounds in professional boxing is not determined by quantitative criteria, i.e. the number of punches thrown/landed, instead judges score rounds using a combination of qualitative criteria, including clean punching, effective aggression and ring generalship.The person landing more punches can lose a round to the person throwing fewer, but more effective punches. That being said, there are of course specific scenarios which directly impact the score cards, as in the case of knockdowns and point deductions.

Markus H. (Orlando, FL): You were pretty down on Gary Russell Jr. in the past. I wanted to know what were your thoughts about his recent performance and what do you see next for him?

Vivek W. (ESB): There was a point in which I just felt that Russell simply wasn’t showing any evolution. We knew he possessed great speed and a certain level of skill, but we never really saw it translate against the level of opposition good enough to bring all of it out. After seeing him coast to easy victories over guys who had no business in the ring with him, it simply got old. All that being said, just as he once warranted criticism, I think at this stage he clearly deserves praise! And a lot of it!

Andy Lee vs Peter Quillin ends in draw; Garcia beats Peterson

In an exciting fight, WBO middleweight champion Andy Lee (34-2-1, 24 KOs) got up off the canvas twice to rally in the second half of the fight to salvage a 12 round majority draw against former WBO 160 pound champion Peter Quillin (31-0-1, 22 KOs). Lee knocked Quillin down in the 7th round with a right hook to the head. That knockdown negated one of Quillin’s earlier knockdowns.

Garcia vs. Peterson/Quillin vs. Lee: Will either underdog upset the PBC apple-cart?

The PBC on NBC returns in primetime with a solid doubleheader to whet the appetites of us hardcore fans. The main event between Danny Garcia and Lamont Peterson is stylistically matched very well and should keep a channel-surfing mainstream-sports fan occupied. The co-feature matches power with power in the form of Peter Quillin versus Andy Lee with Lee’s middleweight belt at stake. Will either underdog knock-off one of the favorites and give the Premier Boxing Champions the surprise it’s been lacking?

The debut of the PBC on NBC was a smash-hit in the ratings department back on March 7th. Unfortunately the only real entertainment on that night was the second-half of an otherwise one-sided fight between Keith Thurman and Robert Guerrero. This card on Saturday night in Brooklyn, New York, live from the Barclays Center should be a lot more compelling.
