Left- Hook Lounge: Deontay Wilder, Garcia/Matthysse, & Mayweather/Canelo!!!

wilder44Art N. (Los Angeles, CA): On your Facebook page you spoke about Deontay Wilder and how KO artist should perhaps not get so much early praise. Do you think he has a shot to be the next best American Heavyweight?

Vivek W. (ESB): Deontay Wilder has become a hot topic! How hot? On Yahoo! this weekend he was ranked #7 on the global trending report. As interesting as that may be, my point in the FaceBook post was that I approach him like I do any other heavy handed puncher in the sport. I enjoy the KO’s and the process of seeing the fighter rack them up! But when the rubber hits the road, it all comes down to whether or not that puncher has the ability to deal with an opponent who has the power to hurt them, the stamina to outwork them, and chin to outlast them. That’s when it all gets “real” inside the ring! Many of you who followed the fight game before Tyson went wild and Pacquiao brought “good guy” back in style know full well that power without those other elements mean very little.

Broner targeting Maidana and Matthysse

broner55It’s been thought that WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner (27-0, 22 KO’s) will give up his newly won World Boxing Association 147 lb. title without defending it rather than facing the likes of Marcos Maidana and Keith Thurman. Broner, however, is now saying he wants to fight Maidana and then Lucas Matthysse after that. There’s no word from Broner about whether he’ll bother defending his title against WBA interim welterweight champion Keith Thurman, who has already said he wants to fight Broner next.

Broner said this about Maidana and Matthysse on Thursday on his social media site: You a damn fool if you think Chino Maidana can beat me. LOL! And when I’m done with this b**ch Chino Maidana, I’m go f*** Matthysse up. Easy money.”

I like how Broner throws in one of Floyd Mayweather Jr’s “easy money” comments, because that’s something that Mayweather Jr. says all the time.

If Broner is serious about wanting to face Maidana and Matthysse in back to back fights, he may not be the WBA champion for long.

Broner to Danny Garcia: F**k that dude [Matthysse] up; I’ll get the other Argentine [Maidana]

broner544For the first time WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner (27-0, 22 KO’s) revealed that he could be facing the hard hitting Argentinian challenger Marcos Maidana (34-3, 31 KO’s) next rather than vacating his title and ducking the fight like a lot of boxing fans think Broner will do.

Broner sent a twitter of encouragement today to WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia, telling him to beat his scheduled September 14th opponent Argentinian Lucas Matthysse (34-2, 32 KO’s), and that Broner would then take care of the other Argentinian, meaning Maidana.

Danny “Swift” Garcia vs. Lucas Matthysse added as co-main event of “The One: Mayweather vs. Canelo”

matthysse44LOS ANGELES (July 18, 2013) – Mayweather Promotions, Golden Boy Promotions and Canelo Promotions officially announced today that Undisputed Super Lightweight World Champion Danny “Swift” Garcia and WBC Interim Super Lightweight World Champion Lucas “The Machine” Matthysse will meet in a decisive bout which will anchor the undercard of the biggest boxing event in years, “THE ONE: Mayweather vs. Canelo” on Saturday, Sept. 14 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, live on SHOWTIME PPV®.

If Mayweather vs. Canelo is “THE ONE” fight for boxing fans worldwide, then the highly anticipated Garcia vs. Matthysse is “THE ONE-A.” Garcia, the undefeated WBC, WBA Super and The Ring Magazine World Champion, has emerged as the division’s dominant force over the last 18 months by dismantling world champions Amir Kahn, Zab Judah and Mexican legend Erik Morales twice.

Garcia-Matthysse being talked about for Mayweather vs. Canelo card

matthysse53A big fight between Lucas Matthysse (34-2, 32 KO’s) and WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (26-0, 16 KO’s) is being talked about as a possible co main event for the Floyd Mayweather Jr. – Saul “Canelo” Alvarez pay per view card on Showtime on September 14th. Steve Kim is reporting that Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is working on putting the Garcia vs. Matthysse fight together for the Mayweather-Canelo card.

Having Garcia and Matthysse on the Mayweather-Canelo fight card would definitely go a long ways towards drawing additional interest in the PPV card; not that it really needed a lot of help. The Mayweather-Canelo fight is so good in itself that really don’t need a whole lot on the undercard to make the card worth the $65 asking price [$75 HD] for fight.

Will Danny Garcia duck the Matthysse fight in September?

garcia5645WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse (34-2, 32 KO’s) appears to have finally cornered WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (26-0, 16 KO’s) after chasing him with no luck for the past year. Garcia, 25, is now in a situation where he has to fight Matthysse this September or else risks having the World Boxing Council strip his WBC strap from him for failing to face his mandatory challenger.

One would hope that Garcia will agree to voluntarily face Matthysse, but after noticing how shook up Garcia appeared moments after Matthysse demolished Lamont Peterson in three rounds on May 18th of this month, you can’t be certain Garcia will agree to take the fight with him. Garcia has two titles, so he can safely give up the WBC title if he likes and hold onto the WBA strap and avoid what could be a potentially embarrassing fight for him.

Matthysse: I want Pacquiao

matthysse55WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse (34-2, 32 KO’s) doesn’t mind being called the new Manny Pacquiao, but he much rather get a fight against the aging Filipino fighter before he retires or ends up getting knocked out again. Matthysse knocked out Lamont Peterson in the 3rd round last Saturday night, and at the post-fight press conference, Matthysse’s promoter Richard Schaefer called him the new Pacquiao.

This was Matthysse’s 6th straight knockout and he’s looking really powerful right now and similar to how Pacquiao looked in his prime.

Matthysse said “I didn’t imagine I would knock him [Peterson] out so fast. I was expecting a tougher fight. I’m happy to be compared to Manny Pacquiao, but what I want to do is fight him.”

Matthysse: I’ll fight Mayweather or Canelo

matthysse564WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse is really hoping that WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia will step up to the plate on September 7th and agree to fight him. However, Matthysse is concerned that Garcia might not agree to the fight because he looked worried last Saturday night after Matthysse dispatched Lamont Peterson in three rounds at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

If Garcia decides it’s too dangerous a fight for him then Matthysse says he’s open to moving up in weight to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Saul “Canelo” Alvarez if either of them are interested in the fight.

Khan wants Matthysse fight; thinks he’s got the style to beat him

matthysse100(Photo credit: Sumio Yamada) Amir Khan liked what he saw of Lucas Matthysse last night in his easy 3rd round TKO win over Lamont Peterson at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. However, Khan saw things in Matthysse’s fighting style that he feels would enable him to beat the Argentinian and he says he’d like to fight him.

Khan said “I’d love to fight Lucas Matthysse. My style would definitely suit Matthysse and I’d beat him. This wants me to stay at 140.”

Khan is moving up to 147 in his next fight, so it’s easy for him to say all this stuff now about wanting to fight Matthysse when it doesn’t look like it’s doable.
