The upcoming fight schedule for this weekend is filled to the rim with action-packed fights and if we’re lucky we may even get a fight of the year candidate. Events being staged in Brooklyn, Los Angeles, Liverpool, and Leicester involve different levels of meaning from stern challenges to stay-busy.

Let’s start in Brooklyn, New York at the Barclays Center on leading network in the United States Showtime. Shawn Porter and Andre Berto face off in a fun welterweight matchup with a mandatory slot on the line for Keith Thurman’s WBC’s strap.

Both the fighters themselves and the fans of both Martin Murray and Gabriel Rosado are expecting something special on April 22 in Liverpool, UK. The two teak-tough middleweights will go to war next month and both aim to use a win as a steppingstone to a bigger fight.

Philly’s Rosado, 23-10(13) and Manchester’s Murray, 34-4-1(16) have both tasted the drama and the painful near-glory of fighting for a world title before – in fact both fighters have shared a ring with world middleweight king Gennady Golovkin – but the desire to win the crown continues to drive both men. To get another shot, Rosado will have to come through Murray, or Murray will have to get past Rosado. Either way, fight fans are in for a great night on April 22.

Ortiz defeats Scott; Sosa beats Smith – results

Unbeaten highly ranked heavyweight contender Luis Ortiz (26-0, 22 KOs) did what he had to do in defeating Malik Scott *38-3-1, 13 KOs) by a 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night to stay unbeaten in their clash at the Salle des Étoiles in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

This was supposed to have been a showcase fight for the 37-year-old Ortiz, but Scott had other ideas. He chose to stall out the fight by running around the ring, taunting Ortiz and not engaging. The results of the contest was diaster with angry boxing fans at ringside booing the lack of action. Ortiz couldn’t be blamed for it though. He was trying his best to get to Scott, but the American was totally reluctant to fight him.

In fact, all the publicity he received over his possible fight with GGG has likely made Eubank a bigger name. But who will he fight next?

Joshua Stops Breazeale; Groves & Eubank Jr Win – Results

Making his first defense of his IBF heavyweight title, Anthony Joshua (17-0, 17 KOs) gave American Dominic Breazeale (17-1, 15 KOs) a bad beating in defeating him by a 7th round knockout on Saturday night at the O2 Arena in London, UK. Joshua put the game but limited Breazeale down two times in the 7th. The fight was stopped at 1:01 with Breazeale on the canvas unable to get up. He was too hurt.

Breazeale had talked ahead of time of giving Joshua a tough fight, but the only thing Breazeale was the ability to absorb a horrible beating. I’m not sure that Joshua could have withstood the amount of huge shots that Breazeale took if the fight was the other way around.

George Groves (23-3, 18 KOs) says Martin Murray (33-3-1, 16 KOs) will not hear the final bell when the British boxers collide on Saturday night in a mouth watering WBA World title final eliminator at The O2 in London, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

Groves has been respectful of his opponent in the build up to their super middleweight contest, but at yesterday’s press conference, the ‘Saint’ shared his prediction for the outcome of their hotly anticipated clash.

Martin Murray says George Groves got his name from losing twice to Carl Froch – and believes he’ll look to shift the blame when he beats him in their clash for the WBA International Super-Middleweight title clash at The O2 on Saturday June 25, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

Murray believes Groves is too focused on being the ‘a-side’ of their battle, rather than focusing on the fight itself, as the Brit rivals look to move into line for a crack at the World title in the second half of the year.
