There is a reason why you will have a boxing movie every 4 or 5 up for an Academy Award. Why do people still love Rocky? Why did people care about Micky Ward? Why do people still talk about Buster Douglas beating Mike Tyson? The reasons are not because of jabs, left hooks, hand speed, and or defense. The explanations for this are boxing provides us with the ultimate life metaphor.

It grants us with the underdog and the survival stories, it gives us the drama of one of one combat, and it provides for the individual who participates in it a legacy to remember and possible great financial reward. May 4th will give us all of this and more. We will have a prohibitive underdog in Robert the Ghost Guerrero. Guerrero’s personal family struggle with the scourge of cancer will not leave a dry eye in the building, once the world finds out what they had to go through to get this opportunity.

It will have perhaps the greatest prize fighter (Floyd Mayweather Jr.) of the last 25 years involved. He will be attempting to continue on his stellar legacy and once again send another challenger back to where he came, while keeping his undefeated record. The event could have the best undercard match-up of the last decade. Canelo Alvarez, perhaps boxing’s brightest young budding star, will possibly be taking on boxing’s most underrated champion Austin Trout in a Jr. Middleweight unification bout.

Mayweather faces Guerrero on 5/4; Floyd signs with Showtime/CBS

mayweather46 By Jeff Sorby: Floyd Mayweather Jr. has signed a six-fight deal Showtime/CBS to televise his pay per view fights. HBO attempted to keep Mayweather by making “an aggressive offer” according to Dan Rafael, but it wasn’t enough. The six-fight deal is for 30 months, which means Mayweather is going to have to be a little more active than he’s been lately.

Fighting once a year isn’t going to get the job done if Mayweather is to get all six fights done in just 30 months.

Mayweather’s adviser Leonard Ellerbe told ESPN “HBO, they made a great offer, but Showtime PPV/CBS was substantially greater in every facet. So bottom line, HBO was outgunned. They came to a gun fight with a knife.”

Guerrero’s manager says Mayweather fight is close

guerrero123 By Bill Phanco: Luis De Cubas Jr., the manager for WBC interim welterweight champion Robert Guerrero, says that he believes that a fight between Guerrero and WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. is close to being done for May 4th.

There’s no real mystery that Mayweather Jr. has been leaning in the direction of the three time world champion Guerrero rather than the still unproven but more popular WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez despite the high amount of interest in that fight by boxing fans.

Mayweather Jr. will likely let that fight build until at least September 14th, and perhaps even later.

De Cubas Jr. said to the record.com.mx “We are in the final process of closing…talks are going well and it seems that everything is on track. In two weeks we’ll have a final decision. We have worked hard to put Robert in the limelight for the Mayweather fight. The difference between Guerrero and Canelo [Saul Alvarez] is that Robert has earned his place.”

Guerrero has really helped himself in this past year by moving up from the lightweight division and beating two solid fighters at this weight in Andre Berto and Selcuk Aydin.

By Bill Phanco: A fight between WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s) WBC interim welterweight champion Robert Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) is reportedly in the works for May 4th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. The contracts haven’t been signed as of yet, but this appears to be the fight that the 35-year-old Mayweather wants for the Cinco de Mayo Mexican holiday on May 4th.

Guerrero has won two big fights since moving up to the welterweight division this year in beating Selcuk Aydin and Andre Berto. Both wins were decisive, and Guerrero did a good job of winning despite showing a lack of big power in both. Although he’s moved up from the lightweight division, Guerrero hasn’t lost his high work rate that he was known for in the lower weight classes.

Mayweather had one of his worst performances in his career in his last fight against Miguel Cotto last May. Floyd won the fight but he took some terrible punishment and he looked like he’s lost a step or two.

WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) is being talked about as being the co-main event for this pay per view card on HBO. Alvarez’s potential opponents for the fight are Miguel Cotto, James Kirkland or Austin Trout.

By Bill Phanco: Leonard Ellerbe, one of Floyd Mayweather Jr’s advisers, has reported that Mayweather will be fighting on May 4th [Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo] and September 14th in 2013. Mayweather has two dates but no opponents to fill those dates. The chances of a Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao fight for the first date on May 4th isn’t going to happen.

Schaefer working on Mayweather-Guerrero bout By Bill Phanco: Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions is trying to put together a fight between WBC interim welterweight champion Robert Guerrero and Floyd Mayweather Jr. WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez wants a fight with Mayweather too, but Schaefer is looking to put Guerrero in with Mayweather instead for some reason. It could be that Mayweather isn’t all that eager to get back in with another junior middleweight after taking a lot of punishment in his win over Miguel Cotto last May.

Schaefer told RingTV “Robert [Guerrero] really wants that Mayweather fight, and so I’m going to see what I can do. I’ve already started negotiations for the Guerrero fighting Mayweather, so we’ll see where it’s going to end.”

Let’s hope that Schaefer can put that fight together because it could be a huge one due to Mayweather’s big fan base and the large amount of fans that Guerrero captured with his win over Andre Berto last Saturday night.

Guerrero stands no chance against Mayweather By Bill Phanco: WBC interim welterweight champion Robert Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) will stand little chance of beating WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s) if this fight gets made in early 2013. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is in the beginning stages of trying to put this fight together, but it’s not going to be a good fight unless you like mismatches.

This is really lowering the bar for Mayweather. He’s going from fighting the likes of Miguel Cotto and Victor Ortiz to the slow-handed Guerrero and it’s going to be a huge drop off. Guerrero doesn’t have the speed or power that those guys possess and he’s going to be way out of his league Mayweather. I didn’t see much from Guerrero that I was impressed with in his win over Andre Berto last weekend.

I saw Guerrero get away with holding and hitting for one of his knockdowns in the the 1st round that should resulted in Guerrero being penalized. Guerrero also did a lot of shoving, holding and throwing punches after the bell. I felt those things should have been penalized as well.

Schaefer: Mayweather is interested in Robert Guerrero fight By Rob Smith: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says that WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. is interested in facing WBC interim welterweight champion Robert Guerrero in 2013. Schaefer said to LA Times writer Lance Pugmire “Interest is there. It’s a process, one that has begun. I have a site and date in mind.”

If Mayweather takes the fight this will finally end Guerrero’s constant calling Mayweather out. He’s been wanting a fight with Mayweather for well over a year, and it’s been a source of comedy to some boxing fans because Guerrero was talking about a Mayweather fight even before he’d fought at welterweight. Now that Guerrero has beaten two of the top welterweights in Selcuk Aydin and Andre Berto no one is laughing anymore. They have to take Guerrero seriously, because he’s winning decisively and looking pretty sharp.

Guerrero gave Berto a real beating last Saturday night in a 12 round decision, swelling both of his eyes in the process. After the fight Guerrero declined an offer from Max Kellerman to fight a rematch against Berto, and instead said he wanted Mayweather next.
