Floyd Mayweather has promised that there will be no slow start from him when he finally steps between the ropes to face Filipino fighting machine Manny Pacquiao on Saturday night.

Boxing’s P4P #1 has spoken to US basketball show TNT about his gameplan, saying the usually cautious start he adopts to figure out his opponents rhythm is not a part of his plans for this fight. He said;

“I am going to approach it in a very, very aggressive way and go out there and press the attack early.”

“Of course I would love to win by knockout. I am pretty sure he is going to try come at me extremely strong. I am facing one of the best fighters I have faced.”

As the hours draw closer to the most eagerly anticipated fight of most boxing fan’s lives, the experience couldn’t be more surreal. At the stark risk of disappearing up my own purist arse – the broadcaster hype that follows fights of this magnitude is comparable to people offering you free canapés after you just ate a your favourite home cooked meal.

It’s nice to see others enjoying it, but you’re good. Thanks though.

Much of what is being offered out through glossy lenses is knowledge boxing fans already have. We know Floyd has not lost since he was robbed in the ‘96 Olympics, we know Manny hasn’t had a knockout since the 12th round catch weight bludgeoning of Miguel Cotto in ‘09, we know Floyd had more trouble than honest folk anticipated in two fights against Marcos Madiana last year, we know Manny’s journey from squalor to riches, we know arguably more than any other sound bite – that this fight has been 7 long years in the making.

This will be my last article prior to the big day, the big occasion, the event that is being billed and extolled by many as the greatest event in boxing history. I do not necessarily share those sentiments, because, for me, Ali – Frasier 1, Ali – Foreman, Sugar Ray Leonard – Tommy Hearns 1, and Sugar Ray Leonard – Marvin Hagler were events of as great or greater boxing significance. All of the fighters involved in those events had accomplishments greater than Manny Pacquiao, and the legend of some of them probably equaled or exceeded the accomplishments of Floyd Mayweather Jr. Of course Floyd would disagree with this, and he has every right to be. Because his accomplishments are significant, and one can legitimately argue that he is indeed the The Best Ever (TBE).

Perhaps one of the unique things about a fight as big as this is that it totally transcends the sport of boxing. Everybody has an opinion it would seem.

So close to the fight when it seems every detail has been gone through with a fine tooth comb already (many times) I thought it time for something a little light-hearted.

So to avoid writing about the next time either fighter takes a toilet break, or Manny’s entrance song (which is epic btw!) I thought a tongue-in-cheek look at what the over-the-top grapplers at World Wrestling Entertainment think of Saturday’s fight was in order!

Our Generation’s Super Fight: Mayweather-Pacquiao

How do you know when a super fight is near? When people who don’t watch boxing start talking about boxing. At my gym (non-boxing), I heard someone ask “You going to watch the fight coming up?” Yes, “the fight” says it all.

How we got here?

A chance meeting at a Miami Heat game between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao helped make this fight a reality. From then on, talks between the fighters progressed to the promoters and surprisingly, it didn’t take long to get this fight signed and official. After 2010, I lost hope of this fight ever happening. Olympic style drug testing and failed negotiations knocked this fight out and set boxing back a bit. Pacquiao lost two straight fights in 2012 and that closed the book on this fight for a while. Boxing was missing out on a super fight. After all, how strong is the sport compared to others when you can’t make the biggest fight happen? Fortunately, this super fight is here and is just as big if not bigger than it would’ve been in 2010.
