Cleverly, 26, is relishing his East versus West super-fight against the iron-fisted “Krusher” who has anniahlated 19 of 21 victims with a staggering 18 coming inside three rounds and is confident he’ll finish off the seemingly invincible Kovalev.

“His record is scary reading, it’s just KO after KO, but the more I look at it the more I’m motivated to really take this guy out and prove that I’m not afraid to meet anybody, no matter what their reputation is because that is what a champion does, he faces his challenges,” Said Cleverly.

Big punching unbeaten light heavyweight contender Sergey Kovalev (21-0-1, 19 KO’s) will be facing WBO 175 lb. champion Nathan Cleverly (26-0, 12 KO’s) on August 17th in a fight that will be televised by HBO as part of a possible triple-header with IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale defending his title against challenger Darren Barker in a different location, and IBF super bantamweight champion Jonathan Romero facing an opponent still to be determined.

The Cleverly-Kovalev fight will be staged at the Motorpoint Arena, in Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom.

This will be one of the rare fights for Cleverly where he’s fighting someone that actually is a really good fighter and who has a chance to beat him. You can’t say that about a lot of the guys that Cleverly has been fighting since he picked up the WBO 175 lb. title in 2011. There’s been a lot of weak opposition that Cleverly has been facing and it’s nice to see him fight a live body for a change.

In an era of ever-increasing hype, where hollow records earn title shots and fans watch in exasperation as fighters spend much of their careers more intent on avoiding each other than testing themselves, two fighters last night demonstrated the right way to go about building a career.

In the very definition of a high risk, low reward fight, Canelo Alvarez pounded out a tough, close but clear points win over Austin Trout in a fight that should surely raise the reputation of both fighters. Alvarez’s rapid rise, at the age of just twenty-two, to dual world title holder has not been without its critics, with lacklustre performances against relatively limited opponents such as Alfonso Gomez and Matthew Hatton leading many to question his ability to adapt to opponents who do more than simply stand in front of him.

Result: Nathan Cleverly Outpoints Robin Krasniqi; Chisora defeats Avila

In a fight that was supposed to be a competitive one, WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (26-0, 12 KO’s) totally dominated challenger Robin Krasniqi (39-3, 15 KO’s) in beating him by a 12 round unanimous decision in front of a packed Wembley Arena in Wembley, London, UK. Cleverly took some monstrous shots from Krasniqi in rounds 6, 7 and the 8th rounds, but got the better of him with a high work rate.

The judges scored the fight 120-108, 119-109, and 120-108. Krasniqi showed excellent power throughout but he wasn’t able to keep up with the constant output from Cleverly. There was also a size difference between the two of them. Cleverly looked like a cruiserweight after rehydrating for the fight, while Krasniqi just looked like he was at the same weight he did for the weigh-in. Being much bigger than Krasniqi definitely gave Cleverly a huge advantage in the fight because he was able to absorb the big shots from Krasnqi without getting shock up.
