Big punching Siberian Rocky, Ruslan Provodnikov (24-4, 17ko), has confirmed that his team are talking to Amir Khan’s about a potential clash for later this year.

Rumours about a mooted bout surfaced early last week, with Khan initially appearing to scotch the speculation, although on Boxnation’s UK broadcast of Mayweather/Berto, he acknowledged the possibility, all the while continuing to insist it is Manny Pacquiao he now really wants to fight – seemingly for the size of the pay-day involved, given that his “Money Shot” at the newly retired Floyd Mayweather is dead in the water.

Last night in Verona, the watching world saw Lucas Matthysse (37-3, 34ko) and Ruslan Provodnikov (24-4, 17ko) deliver twelve brutal rounds that in my opinion adequately delivered on the promise of war. Yet because the much mooted knockout between the punchers failed to transpire, reports by sites like Sky Sports in the UK are saying;

“The predicted slug-fest between the two heavy hitters never really took off”

I guess some folk are never truly happy because in my mind the fight played out much as I thought it would, with the hittable Provodnikov getting banged up by a Matthysse who used more of the boxing skill we knew he had going in. He boxed a sensible fight fight for me and didn’t get caught trading TOO often!!

Stylistically speaking this is as close to a hardcore-fight fans dream matchup as any other on the busy spring fight schedule. Lucas “The Machine” is set to do battle against Ruslan “The Siberian Rocky” Provodnikov with the victor possibly facing the co-feature bout winner between Terrance Crawford and Thomas Dulorme. Who will survive this firefight that promises to produce enough electricity to light up all of New York City?

Ruslan Provodnikov came up the hard way both in and outside the ring. From his humble begins as a member of a communal tribe in Western Siberia to grinding his way up the ranks on ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights. I’m saddened that days out from what many are building as FOTY potential, Saturdays scrap between big punching 140lb warriors Ruslan Provodnikov (24-3,17ko) and Lucas Matthysse (36-3,34ko) isn’t getting more attention.

Even on social media it seems that only “die-hard” fans are anticipating, and perhaps appreciating just how much potential to entertain this fight has.

Screened on HBO in the States and on Boxnation in the UK as part of a televised split with Terence Crawford v Thomas Dulorme, it’s safe to say in my opinion that those who will be in attendance ringside at the Turning Stone in Verona, NY are to be in for the biggest treat. Yet somehow, especially here in Britain, it doesn’t seem that enough people are getting truly excited about it.
