Porter Slams Broner For Not Talking Catch-Weight Situation

Porter Slams Broner For Not Talking Catch-Weight Situation

It’s certainly one of the more anticipated fights that Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions brand has delivered thus far, and ahead of Saturday’s clash with Adrien Broner from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, “Showtime” Shawn Porter has spoken via Sky Sports to criticise his opponent for seemingly refusing to discuss the contracted catch-weight stipulation and rehydration clause, that essentially tip the scales in favour of the physically smaller Broner.

Porter, who has boxed up at 154 lb in the past and who comes in as a genuine welter, blowing up to 155-160 on fight night, is angry that Broner is refusing to talk to the media about the catch weight – something “The Problem” insisted on if the fight was to be made.

Shawn Porter will beat Broner, says Loeffler

Former IBF 147 pound champion Shawn Porter (25-1-1, 16 KOs) will be fighting at a catch-weight of 144 pounds this Saturday night against former three division world champion Adrien “The Problem” Broner (30-1, 22 KOs) on Premier Boxing Champions on NBC at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Porter’s fighting style is the type that the 25-year-old Broner has struggled with in the past in his 2013 loss to Marcos Maidana.

Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions believes that Porter has a very good chance of winning on Saturday, even with him having to drain down to 144 to make the catch-weight. Loeffler likes Porter’s skills, and he sees him coming out on top in this interesting match-up.

I guess I was one of those that hoped Adrien Broner might mature a little bit in defeat, use such a humbling as a learning curve and come back not only stronger but having had a much needed “attitude adjustment.”

Like so many people constantly say about “The Problem”, it’s not necessarily ability that’s the issue for him – he has natural talent in spades – rather his attitude, arrogance and out of ring histrionics and theatrics that have given to so many people disliking him and willing he be knocked out whenever he gets between the ropes.

Shawn Porter: No Concerns About The Catchweight - Porter v Broner

The catchweight situation is at the forefront of boxing more than ever right now, most notably with Miguel Cotto, who is using it as the preferred method of defending his WBC middleweight title this weekend against Australia’s Daniel Geale – a visibly larger fighter.

A similar situation, although not quite as extreme, surrounds welterweight Shawn Porter, who fights Adrien Broner as part of Premier Boxing Champions on June 20th at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas at a 145lb catchweight – though unlike Geale, he has a 10lb rehydaration clause woven into the contract that means he won’t be able to “blow-up” on the night beyond 155.

Talking to ThaBoxingVoice about the fight and the catchweight stipulation imposed by Team Broner, Porter was relaxed and confident about the job in hand;

'There Will Be No Issues With The Weight' Says Kenny Porter - Porter v Broner

Ahead of the much anticipated June 20th 145lb catchweight clash between “Showtime” Shawn Porter (25-1-1, 16ko) and fellow Ohioan motor mouth, Adrien Broner (30-1, 22ko) from the MGM Grand in Vegas – the former’s father and trainer, Kenny Porter, has spoken to BeRealtv about how the fight came together and the perceived ‘disadvantages’ the catchweight may present given his son’s naturally heavier build and weight – a notion he dismissed outright as “not an issue” while still conceding anything below 147 requires “adjustment” for Shawn to boil down to.

The fight will potentially be another jewel in the crown of Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions brand, which – thus far – is delivering on it’s promise of consistent, entertaining and most importantly competitive fights.

Broner v Porter - A Tasty Little Match-Up

Say what you want about Al Haymon and his Premier Boxing Champions format – that he’s going to turn it and his stable of fighters into boxing’s UFC, fighting for in-house titles and the like – but scare stories aside – so far I have been nothing but impressed with both the brand itself and the quality of the fights that have been dished up to us, the fans.

Last week’s Burns v Figueroa fight is the most recent case in point, corrupt official aside – of an action packed contest that will surely bring in new fans as well as satisfy the existing ones – and now perhaps the most eagerly anticipated fight of the series yet – between Ohio natives Adrien Broner & Shawn Porter has been confirmed for June 20 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Vegas.

Broner v Porter Rumours Gathering Pace

Broner v Porter Rumours Gathering Pace

Multiple sources online and across social media are beginning to talk about a potential match-up between former IBF 147lb champion Shawn Porter (25-1-1, 16ko) and Floyd Mayweather wannabe Adrien Broner (30-1, 22ko).

The fight, potentially being talked about as a catchweight contest at 144lbs is sure to be an intriguing match-up should it take place and a June 20th date is being mooted by RingTV and in Boxrec’s forum.

Broner has had an easy time of things since dropping a decision to Marcos Maidana some 18 months ago. His last bout, against an out-of-sorts John Molina was a comparitive stroll in the park compared to that fight and the test the strong, stocky and marauding Porter is likely to present.

Porter Gets Back on Track

Porter Gets Back on Track

Cleveland, Ohio native Shawn Porter got back into the win column last night as the co-main event of another “Premiere Boxing Champions” card, which was broadcast live on Spike TV. Although he was originally scheduled to fight rugged veteran Roberto Garcia, there was a last minute replacement. Apparently Garcia was more than 4 pounds overweight the day of the weigh-in and didn’t even bother to show up. So Al Haymon reached out to Erick Bone, a New Yorker by way of Ecuador, and flew him out to California less than 24 hours before the bout.
