Victor Ortiz Ready for Ring Return
He hasn’t been seen in a ring since December of last year, when he stopped Manuel Perez in 3 rounds and badly injured his hand, yet Victor Ortiz is finally ready to return to action, claiming he is fully healed and only needs one fight before going after ‘the big boys.’
“I’m finally healed. I shattered my wrist in my last fight in four places. I had two screws in there. I finally got my cast off 3 months ago, did therapies and what not and I’m going at 100% now,” Ortiz told fighthub.tv.

Boxing has produced some real characters over the years, but Victor Ortiz is developing into one of the most enigmatic men currently active. Ortiz and Rios did grow up together through boxing and this would be a fight with a true emotionally charged back story, but other than that it does not seem to have a lot going for it. The Marcos Maidana, Floyd Mayweather Jr, Josesito Lopez and Luis Collazo debacles do not seem to have phased Ortiz.
Joel Diaz has interesting plans for Victor Ortiz
Trainer Joel Diaz plans on giving former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz one more fight before returning him to the top of the sport. Ortiz is one of those guys who has had a tremendous fall from grace in this sport. In 2011 he beat an undefeated Andre Berto in one of the most exciting fights of that year which saw four knockdowns, a point deduction and a narrow decision. He then went on to fight pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Two Rights Leave One Left Out – Collazo KOs Ortiz
Events at Barclays Center, Brooklyn, NY build up nicely for the shortened main event. First Gary “Mr” Russell, Jr. 24-0-0 (KO 14) proved he is better than most even when he’s not feeling well. He let that slip at the pre-fight meeting with the media. Any questions Fox Sports1 announcers Barry Tompkins, Paulie Malignaggi and Bernard Hopkins about how he would perform were quickly answered. Gary demonstrated he is deserving of serious consideration in the feather and super featherweight divisions by making short work of veteran Miguel “Yaqui” Tamyo. 15-8-2 (KO13) Russell gave up height and reach, but you wouldn’t know it.
He is so smooth and such a good manager of distance that he seems always to be in range, that and the fact that Yaqui cooperated as well. Unfortunately for him, it really didn’t matter whether he tried to be aggressive, either at short range or from a distance. For Gary, Yaqui was always within range. His speed, power and accuracy were just too much for Yaqui. He would try to block the shots and counter, but it was quickly apparent he was getting beat down.
Collazo Paid his dues, Cashes in at Barclay’s Center
Eighteen months off for Victor Ortiz resulted in just below six minutes in the ring as he was shocked by a right hook from Luis Collazo. Tonight was all about Victor Ortiz who for awhile was being pushed along by Golden Boy Promotions as the next possible star and after a bumpy road this may be the final set back. Ortiz in the prefight hype claimed he never really left the gym despite having a badly broken jaw and that his physique should show it. Well Ortiz looked to be in great shape but he came out tight in the first round and was wide with his shots. He won the first round and was aggressive. His lead hand work was pretty good as his jab and right hook appeared to be on point. Luis Collazo fought a relaxed and intelligent fight looking to set up the left hand in the first round. The second round became interesting as both men traded left hands early in the round.
Collazo destroys Ortiz in 2nd round; Russell Jr. stops Tamayo
In the 2nd round, Ortiz’s wild fighting style finally caught up to him when he was tagged by a hard right hook by Collazo while in the process of throwing another one of his own shots. The punch from Collazo snapped Ortiz’s head back, causing him to spin around and bend over facing the audience.
Collazo didn’t waste any time in taking advantage of the helpless Ortiz by landing a left hand that barely connected to his head followed by a light right hook that sent Ortiz down on the canvas on his knees. Ortiz then stayed in that position while the referee counted him out. The official time of the stoppage was 2:59 of the round.

Schaefer: Victor Ortiz wants to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. again
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is going to be trying to rebuild the career of his fighter former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-4-2, 22 KO’s) in 2014. Ortiz, 26, hasn’t fought since his loss to Josesito Lopez in June of 2012, and he’s lost his last two fights with one of them being at the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jr. That’s who Ortiz wants to fight again if possible, but it’s going to take a lot of hard work by him and Golden Boy for that rematch to take place.
“There’s a lot of 140lb and 147lb match-ups we’re working on for this year and Ortiz-Collazo falls within that talented weight class. He wants to get back on the road and fight Floyd Mayweather again but he can’t look past Luis Collazo.”

Former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-4-2, 22 KO’s) is expecting big things if he can get past 32-year-old former WBA World welterweight champion Luis Collazo (34-5, 17 KO’s) next month in their scheduled 10 round fight on January 30th at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, New York, USA.
Ortiz is hoping that a victory over Collazo will get him a big fight against Danny Garcia, the WBA/WBC light welterweight champion. That fight, if it takes place, would be held in the 147 lb. division.
