Former IBF middleweight champion, Darren Barker, has tipped Chris Eubank Jr to go on and win a world title in the none too distant future.
Eubank makes his debut under the Matchroom Sport promotional banner on Saturday night when he faces unheralded American, Tony Jeter, topping a lukewarm bill in Sheffield by default thanks to Kell Brook pulling out of his IBF welterweight fight with Diego Chaves due to [an un-provable] rib injury.
Yet Barker, who retired through injury himself following his December 2013 fight with Felix Sturm, expects Eubank to impress, though rightly thinks his father – now known as ‘English’ – is being far too premature with talk of beating Gennady Golovkin.
“He’s a great fighter, he can punch, he’s almost the total package. I just think he needs a bit more experience and he could go on to win a world title. I do think he can go that far,” barker said to Sky Sports.
“I think his Dad saying he can beat Golovkin is a bit premature. I know he’s saying one day in the future, but I don’t think he’s in that class yet. But he’s got loads of talent and if matched up properly, I think he can go on and win a world title one day.”
Should Eubank overcome his 39 year old foe on Saturday night, as all expect him to, then he can look forward to a December showdown with bitter Irish rival, Gary ‘Spike’ O’ Sullivan – a fight that has been brought about largely due to fan demand and a popular social media campaign by the Irishman’s 55k twitter followers.
