Fight fans might be getting a little bit tired of waiting for the Tyson Fury-Wladimir Klitschko rematch, and they are certainly getting tired about hearing when and where the fight may or may not take place; but still the saga continues. We’ve heard how the fight might go ahead in Austria on June 4th, or in Manchester, UK on the same date.
Then both venues and dates were confirmed as unconfirmed (!) and the wait for something concrete resumed. But today, in speaking with weekly trade paper Boxing News, or at least its website, Fury’s promoter Mick Hennessey said the latest word is that the fight will go ahead at a stadium in the UK in July.
“Negotiations are going very well for it to be in this country (the UK) in July,” Hennessy informed Boxing News. “It’s looking like July in the UK. It’s a stadium fight. That’s all I can say for now.”
It would be huge for British boxing if the rematch – one of the most fascinating in recent years when it comes to the heavyweight division; what with the questions: “Is Fury for real?” or “Did Klitschko simply have a bad day at the office?” being asked repeatedly – and it would be great news for Fury if he got to make his maiden title defence at home. We won’t know for sure until the fight is signed, sealed and delivered of course, but Hennessey clearly knows plenty we do not – enough to tell Boxing News he is “90-percent optimistic we’ll get this fight in July and in this country.”
Maybe Klitschko, who was stung badly by the points loss he suffered last November and has reportedly stepped up intense training for the return meeting, wants to make a statement by taking the rematch in the UK and, he hopes, beating Fury to put things right in the Klitschko universe. It will be big news if Wladimir does box in the UK for only the second time since his July 2000 stoppage win over Monte Barrett in London. Huge news in fact.
