George Groves (20-2, 15 Kos) asked IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch a fight last night following Groves’ 12 round unanimous win over EBU super middleweight champion Christopher Rebrasse (22-3-3, 6 KOs) at the Wembley Arena in London, UK.
While Groves was being interviewed after the fight by Sky Sports, Groves spotted Froch outside of the ring and bluntly asked him for a fight, but Froch wasn’t having any of it as he told him that he’d already beaten him twice and there was no point in the fight.
Groves asking Froch for a fight took away from Groves’ moment because it was obvious that Froch was going to turn him down because he wasn’t thrilled at the idea of fighting Groves a second time after all the trash talking he’d done before their first fight.
“You’ve stopped me twice Carl, but I still think I can beat you and everyone will laugh but so be it, maybe we can do it again. I know you are dancing around at the moment and not in boxing,” Groves said. “I tip my hat to you Carl, immense respect, punch from the gods I’d love to have another crack. If you’re up for it, maybe next year who knows? They might have to build a new stadium for us.”
Groves really needs to focus on what he has in front of him in the form of WBC super middleweight champion Anthony Dirrell because this guy hits too hard for a fighter like Groves to be looking past him as if a win over him was a guaranteed thing.
Dirrell hits a lot harder than the guy that Groves struggled to beat last Saturday night in Rebrasse, and based on that performance from Groves, you’d have to favor Dirrell by a considerable margin to successfully defend his title against Groves.
Those two losses to Froch seemed to have taken something away from Groves’ game because he didn’t look anything like the person who’d given Froch problems in their first fight. He looks weaker than he did now, and his stamina is just as bad. James DeGale looks like he’s fighting at a higher level than Groves does down.
