Ahead of Tyson Fury’s massive heavyweight showdown with Wladimir Klitschko on October 24th in Dusseldorf, Germany, the giant, 6′ 9″ challenger has been looking trim and in the shape of his career a little over a month out, a notion confirmed by trainer and Uncle, Peter Fury, who has insisted preparations are going smoothly and to plan.
Speaking to Buncey’s Boxing Podcast, Fury – the father of Tyson’s Cousin, Hughie, who also boxes on the card, said that while the team appreciate the dominance and 11 year unbeaten streak of Klitschko, they are preparing to play to their strengths and plan on getting it right tactically on the night.
The elder Fury has been studying the champion intently in the build up and has brought in tall and strong sparring partners for his nephew – including world kickboxing champion Rico Verhoeven – with a particular focus on them possessing a good jab – one of the champion’s best and most used assets.
“I can see what we will need to do to get around Klitschko,” Peter said. “He’s got fast hands, a good jab and he’s very athletic – he’s got good movement. He’s also got confidence and that’s what we’ll be looking to take away from him.
“I think Klitschko may start fast and try and get on Tyson early, not let him get into a rhythm. I think he’ll bring it and that suits Tyson as well. I think there will be fireworks in this fight.
“He’s still got some things to work on [before the fight] but he’s getting better and better as the weeks go on,” he added. “Tyson’s really getting a grip on it, his style’s the way I want it to be and the tactics are coming on.
Many are predicting the Brit, with his unorthodox switch-hitting style and exceptional mobility [especially for a big man] will cause Wladimir the most problems of any challenger in recent memory, although the size of the stage he is to perform on will be something completely new to the unbeaten challenger.
“Tyson can fight – he can box, he can fight on the inside and he knows that he’s going to need to use a little bit of everything he’s good at – and the best chess player will win it,” Fury added.
“I’d like to think that Tyson can change the face of the heavyweight division. Maybe he can, maybe he can’t but we won’t know until he gets in there [with Klitschko].
“He knows that he’s got a job to do. He looks forward to challenges and I do too. We are really looking forward to this fight and we are very excited about it.”
