Wladimir Klitschko and Kubrat Pulev sell out the O2 Arena in Hamburg, Germany

There are no more regular seats available for the IBF heavyweight title fight on Sep. 6 at the O2 World Hamburg. Kubrat Pulev said he tried to buy tickets for friends recently and he couldn’t, he contacted K2 promotions and found out he might find separate seats if he used a German IP address and checked regularly for availability. Those seats would be either lowest price that do not offer a good view or highest price (unreasonably expensive). Pulev himself was promised “one or two” free tickets, so he is not getting a lot of compliments from Klitschko and company.

The unbeaten Bulgarian knows he is a mandatory challenger per se, that is Wladimir Klitschko clearly does not want the fight and is only complying with an obligation. This is not a big money event for K2 while for Pulev this would be a career defining fight and his biggest payday. K2 promotions are handling the event and Kubrat Pulev is just a participant, and opponent that brings some intrigue and his 0 into the contest but not too much revenue.

We have a football season, basketball season, baseball season and so on. Every sports have its schedule and meet their mandatory opponents and then the last one standing is crowned as the champion. This is done on a yearly basis and in some cases every 4 years like in the World cups and the Olympics. The fact is that in these sports, the opponents are not avoided, no short routes taken or not allowed to settle for an alternate opponent. Miami heat have to be dealt with Antonio spurs and so they are not the champions now. They did not take a short cut playing a lesser team and still posing as the NBA champions. No excuses,no stepping aside on recess and definitely no alternative opponents. They played the mandatory opponent and dealt with the results. That’s real sports.

Arum says Cotto’s next fight likely won’t be HBO PPV

In a sign that WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto will be taking on a lesser fighter in his next fight in December, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum says that Cotto’s next fight will likely not be on HBO pay-per-view.

Arum notes that the pay-per-view numbers are down across the board among all the top stars in boxing, and he feels that Cotto’s December fight shouldn’t be on PPV. What that means, of course, is that Arum likely has a good idea about who Cotto will be fighting next, because if Cotto were facing the likes of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez or Gennady Golovkin, he would clearly be fighting on HBO pay-per-view.

Cotto’s adviser to consider Golovkin fight among others

WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto’s adviser Gabriel Penagaricano says that a unification fight between Cotto and WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) is just one of the possible options available for Cotto’s next fight in December. However, they have other options that they’re going to explore as well and they’ll make a determination once they decide on which is the best opponent to take for the fight.

Penagaricano says they haven’t yet sat down to discuss which of the guys that Cotto will be facing yet, but they’ll be doing that soon.

If Cotto wants to have his next fight on HBO pay-per-view, he’s going to need to face someone along the lines of Golovkin, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez or Julio Cesar Chavez Jr next, because Cotto’s pay-per-view numbers for his last fight against former WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez were rumored to be less than spectacular.

Arum working on Chavez Jr-Froch fight for 1/24

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is confident that he can put together a mega fight between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (48-1-1, 32 KO’s) and IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KOs) for January 24th for the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Arum has been in communication with Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn and his father Barry in working out a deal to get Froch and Chavez Jr into the ring in what promises to be an interesting match-up between two big sluggers.

“I’m convinced we can get it done,” Arum said to ESPN’s Dan Rafael. “I made a proposal that I don’t want to get into but I think it would be acceptable.”

Gennady Golovkin: The Boxing Monster

I think most may recall the story of how Marvel character Wolverine was created, at least in the movies. He was part of a scientific experiment in which liquid metal was injected to his bones. That created the frightening super hero we all love. I suggest we could come up with a similar comic book style origin story about middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin.

The boxer from Kazakhstan caught the eyes of most fans in the United States when he first appeared on HBO against formidable opponent Gregorz Proksa in 2012. Proksa, like 20 others to that date, was defeated before the final bell. His last opponent to have gone to distance(8 rounds) was Amar Amari in 2008. After that the champion has stopped every one of his last 17 opponents.

The power that this man carries is almost unimaginable.

Golovkin willing to be the B-side against the top guys, says Loeffler

To show how serious WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) is willing to get the big names to fight him, he’s willing to be the B-side and even the C-side to make those fights happen, says his promoter Top Loeffer of K2 Promotions.

Loeffler doesn’t say who these fighters are that he’d be willing to have Golovkin play second fiddle, but you would have to guess that he’s talking about Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, but not necessarily in that order.

Soliman wants Golovkin next year

IBF middleweight champion Sam Soliman (44-11, 18 KOs) is targeting WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) for a fight next year in the first part of the year. Soliman recently won the IBF title off of Felix Sturm last May in beating him by a 12 round unanimous decision in Germany.

Instead of milking his IBF title the weakest of opponents like we see with many of the world champions nowadays, Soliman says he wants to face Golovkin in a unification match.

Soliman thinks that he can beat Golovkin with his boxing skills and make him miss all night in the same way that Daniel Geale was doing at times last Saturday night before he was knocked out in the 3rd round by Golovkin.
