Ringside Report: Viloria-Keb Baas

14.02.04 – By: Don Deane: Espn2 Friday Night Fights was the show, Mohegan Sun Arena was the place and Brian Viloria vs Juan Alfonso Keb-Baas was the main event in a fairly lackluster night of boxing.

Brian Viloria vs Juan Alfonso Keb-Baas-12 Round Flyweight Main Event

The fight was quite lopsided early on as Viloria came out charging using his superior speed and straighter punching against Keb-Baas. Viloria spent a lot of the first round landing solid 1-2 combos. In round 2 Viloria landed a nice counter left hook followed by a series of pitty-pat shots against the ropes. Rounds 3 and 4 saw more of Viloria chasing Keb-Baas around the ring and landing the better shots. Keb-Baas did come alive a bit in the 4th to land some punches. In round 5, Viloria began to sit on his counterpunches and struck Keb-Baas with a sharp uppercut. Round 6 saw Viloria snap a hard counter right followed by a counter hook later on. These hard combos along with the nice body work from round 7 led to the inevitable round 8 knockdowns. Keb-Baas was floored with a right-left combination in Viloria’s corner. He was later dropped again with a right hand in a neutral corner. The ref and doctor let the fight continue and we were all treated to 4 rounds of great action following the knockdowns. Keb-Baas came out tough in round 9 after he shook off the after effects of getting decked. Viloria looked hesitant to inflict more punishment on Keb-Baas. After Keb-Baas landed a combo to the torso and head, Viloria got back into the fray. Viloria came out throwing harder shots in round 10, including a stiff right hand. Keb-Baas didn’t run as much in rounds 10 or 11 and the two went toe to toe a bit in round 12 after Viloria came out swinging to set the round off. In the end, all 3 judges had it 119-107, while Eastside was a little more generous to Keb-Baas at 118-108. Viloria improves to 14-0 and Keb-Baas reaches double digits as he falls to 30-10-1.

Clarence Vinson vs Roberto Chacon-10 Round Bantamweight Co-Main

This fight was short and too the point. Vinson got dropped in the first round in a half slipping, half off balance knockdown. He got up, landed some nice shots then finished his foe with a ridiculous counter right hand that knocked Chacon clean out. Chacon was on his knees, but actually thought he was standing on his feet. Needless to say, that ended things. Vinson improved to 13-1 with KO number 6. Chacon falls to 11-5-1.

Undercard Results

Levan Easley cruised to a 60-54 win on all 3 judges and Eastside’s card over the much outclassed, awkward and lanky Shannon Miller. The super middleweight bout was quite slow paced as Miller just flopped around while Easley watched. Easley improves to 17-9-2 while Miller falls to 18-28-7.

The heavyweight pro debut of Ehinomen Ehikhamenor went well as he ended things in round 1 over the grossly flabby and horrendous Anthony Riddick. Riddick fell to 2-6, while Ehikhamenor is obviously now 1-0 with 1 KO.

The opener, also in heavyweight was a decent fight with Talmadge Griffis looking really ripped and Harold Rodriguez looking like a Butterbean stunt double. The fight was entertaining and Rodriguez was fun to watch until the 5th round when Griffis landed about 9 right hands in a row and walked away to his corner laughing after the bell rang. Rodriguez was done on his stool after that barrage. Griffis rises to 22-5-3 with stoppage number 14 and Rodriguez fell to 4-7.
