01.09.04 – Thomas Ulrich and Alexander Dimitrenko will be following in the footsteps of their famous stable mates when they step into the ring on October 16 on an event of Universum Box-Promotion at Volkswagenhalle in Braunschweig. Two years ago two other fighters, one at heavyweight and one at light heavyweight, attracted huge crouds to that same huge sports arena, located 1,5 hours southern from Hamburg.
In September 2002 Dariusz Michalczewski fought his second battle against American Richard Hall at Volkswagenhalle, whereas seven months earlier Dr. Vitali Klitschko knocked out Vaughn Bean in round eleven at the same place.
This will be strong motivation for Thomas Ulrich, 27-1 (19), who will defend his European light heavyweight title in the main attraction of the upcoming event. The 29 year old man from Berlin captured the vacant EBU crown on July 17 in a memorable battle against Silvio Branco. While trailing on points against an impressively performing Italian, Ulrich managed to score a stunning come from behind knockout in round eleven.
The co-attraction of the evening is an explosive heavyweight clash between undefeated 22 year old Russian Alexander Dimitrenko, 15-0 (10), and seasoned warrior Ross Puritty. Facing the man who once defeated Wladimir Klitschko may well be the most important test in the career of the 6-foot-7 “Baby Face”.
The fight between Dimitrenko and Puritty was already scheduled for July 31. But the American suffered an injury in training and had to postpone his mission. In that night Dimitrenko fought Englishman Julius Francis instead and scored an one sided unanimous decision, easily winning every minute of every round against the experienced former British champion.
In another title fight European super weltweight champion Sergej Dzindziruk 27-0 (21), will make the first defense of his crown won on July 17.
On the undercard: Middleweight Koren Gevor, welterweight Michel Trabant and former woman world champion Daisy Lang.
