Alexander Dimitrenko to face Sample first, then Puritty

10.09.04 – Undefeated Hamburg based heavyweight Alexander Dimitrenko, 15-0 (10), will be facing American Andy Sample, 32-7-2 (21), on Saturday in Leverkusen. It may be just a stopover for the 6 foot 7 giant who will face a more serious test on October 16 when he will fight experienced veteran Ross Puritty.

„I wanted Puritty as opponent and now I’m happy that my management could realize it“, the 22-year-old Dimitrenko said about the former conqueror of Wladimir Klitschko. “Now I will have the chance to show that I can box variable and that I can punch hard. I don’t like to be compared with the Klitschko brothers. But everbody else compares us. That’s why I enjoy the idea to face the man who defeated Wladimir and lost to Vitali. Puritty fought against the best. Now it’s time to show my talent to all boxing experts. This is going to be a difficult fight. It’s the best test I can get.”

Dimitrenko’s fight against “Sandman” Sample will be on the undercard of an WBO international middleweight title fight featuring former WBO world champion Felix Sturm, 20-1 (9), who is facing American Robert Frazier, a nephew of hall of fame boxer “Smokin” Joe Frazier. It’s Sturm’s first contest since losing a highly controversial decision to Oscar de la Hoya on June 5.

The fight between Dimitrenko and Puritty was already scheduled for July 31. But the American suffered an injury in training and had to postpone his mission. In that night Dimitrenko fought Englishman Julius Francis instead and scored an one sided unanimous decision, easily winning every minute of every round against the experienced former British champion.

Now Dimitrenko and Puritty are lined up for October 16 at the huge Volkswagenhalle in Braunschweig where European light heavyweight champion Thomas Ulrich will defend his title in the main event.
