16.03.05 – Orange, CA – Thompson Boxing Promotions has announced a terrific and intriguing battle as the main event for “Path to Glory – Who Will be the Last Man Standing,” which will take place on March 28, 2005, at the Doubletree Hotel, Ontario. Talented Michael Santos (11-2, 7 KOs) will face undefeated prospect Avelino Chavez (13-0, 8 KOs), in a 10-round battle for the Youth World Boxing Council Welterweight title.
“This is a great fight, and we can’t wait until the bell goes off,” said promoter Ken Thompson from his office. “These two fighters are like lions, and they’re both hungry for a world ranking and fame,” added Thompson.
The winner is guaranteed a spot in the top 40, rankings that are controlled by the WBC, and considering their young careers it could mean bigger and better fights in the near future.
Michael Santos, from Los Angeles, has surpassed the rockiest point of his career after he suffered a shoulder injury that almost had him retired. After the grueling therapy process he has comeback to showcase his gutsy boxing style. Santos was a contender for the same title against Yuri Tsybenko, in Russia (10/8/03), but he lost the bout by a 10 round decision. What nobody knew, including those in his corner, is that he had badly injured his shoulder in the third round.
“I’m back,” said a happy Santos, after he avoided a surgery that was going to stop his boxing life for good. “I want to get busy and try to recover the lost time,” said Santos. Following the loss in Russia he beat tough Josh Zurfluh, by second round KO, and Juan Garcia, in an eight round war.
On the other hand, Avelino Chavez, from Las Vegas, is exactly as his nickname states: “The Teen Idol.” Adored by fans, he has run over all his opponents and catapulted himself to this stage. He makes no promises, but he exudes confidence in the ring. His punching ability and fast movement might prove a difficulty for the sharp Santos.
“This is not a walk in the park,” said Chavez from his training camp in Sin City. “But if Santos thinks I’m going to be an easy opponent he is dead wrong. I don’t take him lightly but I’m running out of sparring partners, I’m beating all the guys that help me train, so I can’t wait until Santos comes around.”
This 10 round fight could be a barnburner but the supporting cast will ensure an unforgettable night of boxing. Three super featherweight bouts are also part of this card. Ramon Valle (6-9, 1 KO) will face Juan Carlos Martinez (11-24, 1 KO) in an eight round semi main event. Plus two four-rounders between Dominic Salcido (5-0, 4 KOs), who will return against always-tough Alejandro Tito Ramirez (8-6-1, 5 KOs), and Hector De La Cruz (0-1-1) who will face Damon Murillo (0-1). Future superstar Timothy Ray Bradley Jr. (3-0, 2 KOs) will face Pedro Bartolo (1-0) in a four round jr. welterweight fight. Plus heavyweights Israel Spencer and Christopher Valente will be making their professional debut.
A press conference to formally announce the event will be held on Wednesday, March 23rd, at 11:00 a.m. at MistyÔáýs Lounge, which is inside the Doubletree Hotel, Ontario, located on 222 N. Vineyard Ave., off the 10 freeway, exit Vineyard Ave.
