Rock & Sock – “A Ring of Their Own” Invades Canada

17.05.05 – The third installment of Rock and Sock Productions’ “A Ring Of Their Own” all-women’s boxing series will take place on Saturday, June 18, at the The Shaw Center in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Co-promoting with Rock and Sock will be KO Boxing and Independent Jewelers, both of Edmonton. The card will feature both Canadian and U.S. fighters.

The main event is the highly anticipated rematch of Jelena Mrdjenovich (11-1) and Layla McCarter (18-11-4). McCarter gave Jelena the only loss on her record via a six round decision win. This match will be eight rounds, and sanctioned as a WIBA eliminator at 135 pounds.

In the co-feature, Lisa Brown (10-1-2) will take on Kelli Cofer (10-2-4) in a featherweight six-rounder. Asa Sandell of Sweden (2-0-1) returns to North America to take on Donna Logue (0-0-1) in a four-round super middleweight battle, and rounding out the card, Edmonton’s undefeated Amy Johnson (4-0-1) takes on fellow countrywoman Olga Heron (3-5) in a six-round jr. lightweight bout. A fifth fight will be announced shortly.

“I look forward to this promotion if for no other reason than that Canada has produced some of the best women boxers in the world, and quite frankly, the Canadians were more aggressive than the States in their support of female fighting years ago,” said Rock and Sock partner Arnie “Tokyo” Rosenthal. Ken Weiss, Arnie’s partner, was more specific. “It’s hard to get rematches like this one between Layla and Jelena. We applaud both of them for making this possible.”

The show will be telecast live on Pay Per View in Canada, and on delayed broadcast in the United States and internationally. Popular female boxer Mia St. John will be part of the broadcast team. “A Ring Of Their Own” is the only all-women’s boxing series. It debuted this past January.

Rock and Sock also announced that the AROTO show, scheduled for May 28 in Georgetown, Guyana, is being re-scheduled for July and the exact date and card will be announced soon. Light heavweight champion Gwedolyn O’Neil will headline the event.
