10.06.05 – Michael Jennings will challenge Jimmy Vincent for the Vacant British Welterweight title after David Barnes was stripped of the title. Jennings takes on Birmingham hardman Vincent at the Bolton Arena on Saturday 16 July featuring as chief support to Matt Skelton’s British Heavyweight title defence against Danny Williams plus the professional debut of Amir Khan.
The slick Chorley stylist maintained his unbeaten record with a ninth round stoppage of Chesterfield rival Gavin Down last Friday night at the M.E.N Arena and retained his English title in the process.
Unfortunately for Barnes, a stablemate of Jennings at the Collyhurst and Moston gym, he did not have the same luck the following night when he was stopped in the last round of his fight against tough Ghanaian Joshua Okine for the Commonwealth title.
Jennings said, “I’m bitterly disappointed for David to lose his British title in that manner because I’m a big believer in that you should lose your title in the ring,”
“However, I am confident that I will beat Vincent and bring the title back to our gym,”
“I was in David’s corner the night he beat Vincent to win the title and have seen him up close plenty of times and know that his style will not change against me,”
“He’s tough man who never takes a backwards step and has a high work rate but this will suit me down to the ground with my counter-punching style as I will box him off the backfoot and break him down with my jab,”
“It will be a very tough fight but I know my ability and believe that I am up there with the best in the domestic division and now is my time to prove it.”
