07.08.05 – WBO World Super-Middleweight king Joe Calzaghe believes he has the beating of rival IBF Champ Jeff Lacy after watching him defeat Robin Reid last Saturday night. Welshman Calzaghe will get finally get his chance to unify the titles after his promoter Frank Warren has secured a showdown with Lacy on November 5 in Britain but he must first successfully defend his crown for a record 17th time on September 10 at the Cardiff International Arena..
Unbeaten Calzaghe said, “I’m delighted that Lacy won and is still undefeated to set up our showdown in November in what will be real super-fight.”
“That was probably Lacy’s best performance yet and impressed me but it’s hard to say how good Lacy is because Reid was so poor,”
“Reid is past it though and I’m glad he didn’t win because it would be a case of going over old ground if we had to meet again and I wouldn’t have been as up for it as I would have for a fight against Lacy,”
“I prefer fighters who come forward throwing big punches and Lacy’s style is made for me. I’m a completely different fighter to Reid and I’m even more confident of Lacy now,”
“First things first, I have to win on September 10 to keep the Lacy fight. We’ve seen in recent months the older experienced champion lose to the younger challenger. Kostya Tszyu lost to Ricky Hatton and Jermain Taylor defeated Bernard Hopkins but that will not happen to me. I train as a challenger and I’m hungrier than ever.”
Warren said, “It’s now all down to Joe to do the business in his fight. Lacy is lined up for November 5 in Britain but first Joe has to win on September 10. Joe’s opponent will be announced shortly but he knows he will have to do an impressive job on him to keep his unification fight against Lacy.”
Calzaghe is the headline attraction on a superb card that also features boxing goldenboy Amir Khan’s second professional fight. Both fights will be televised exclusively live on ITV1.
