Lamon Brewster speaks on Klitschko and the future of the heavyweight division

10.11.05 – Interview by Ike Enwereuzor: Who is the best heavyweight today? Don King calls him “The Black Rocky”. In his last fight in Germany he successfully retained his WBO heavyweight title for the third time against his mandatory Luan Krasniqi by 9th round TKO. Brewster (33-2 with 29KO’s) captured the vacant WBO belt April 2004 after dismantling heavily favored former WBO champ Wladimir Klitschko.. After his impressive wins over Andrew Golota and Luan Krasniqi, it’s my opinon that Brewster is one of the best in the division today. Here’s what Brewster had to say about Vatali Klitschko and the future of the heavyweight division..

Ike: Your thoughts on Vitali Klitschko retirement?

Brewster: I wanted to fight him but he hand picks his opponents. I’m sad about it, he gave up his title to retire for injury. I don’t want anyone to be in a position where they can’t provide for their family.

Ike: What can you tell us about your fight with Luan Krasniqi?

Brewster: I knew he was a good fighter but I had to win that fight, I felt like I was going against the whole Germany but my faith prevailed. He landed some good shots

Ike: Tell us about your fight with Andrew Golota?

Brewster: It was a fight I trained very hard and long for. I was gateful to God to allow all my great work to pay off.

Ike: What did you learn from your fight with Kali Meehan?

Brewster: I learned I cannot fight my friend in the ring and separate personal from business.

Ike: What do you think of the John Ruiz vs Nikolai Valuev fight December 17, 2005?

Brewster: I don’t know what to expect, I haven’t seen Nikolai Valuev fight, all I know that he’s a big guy and I don’t know how good he is. There’s so much we don’t know. It will be a really interesting fight.

Ike: What’s next for you?

Brewster: I was hoping to fight the winner between Vitali Klitschko and Hasim Rahaman but now Vatali retired so I hope Don King can make the unification tournament happen soon. I would love to fight Rahman as long as the money is right and we can all eat and feed our families. It doesn’t make sense if we put our belts online and don’t get compensated for it. I want to fight any of the 3 title holders.

Ike: What’s your impression of Hasim Rahman?

Brewster: He’s a good fighter with a great right hand. I’m willing to fight him to prove I’m the best in the division.

Ike: What’s it like working with Sam Simon and Jesse Reid?

Brewster: Sam is a great guy to work with, he’s trying hard as a manager and he’s my friend. I have no complaints. He was there for me when everyone left me. Jesse is a great motivator and a terrific trainer.

Ike: What’s your prediction for Taylor vs Hopkins rematch?

Brewster: The one that wants it most will take it. This one will be based on will power.

Ike: Your hobbies when not fighting?

Brewster: I love to play with my kids, I play chess and things like Play Station.

Ike: What do you remember about your amateur fights with Davarryl Williamson?

Brewster: You wanna know about that fight? Williamson is a tough and good puncher. I lost to him and I beat him also.

Comment to your fans?

Brewster: I thank all my fans for supporting me including my new fans in Germany. Don’t let anybody tell you what you can do or can’t do. I’m a good example, some disbelieved in me but I prove them wrong by beating all the odds. I want my fans to know I should be back in action Febuary or march 2006, stay tuned!
