PROVIDENCE – On Wednesday, May 10, Classic Entertainment & Sports, Inc. (CES) presents “A Night of Championship Boxing” when undefeated cruiserweights Matt Godfrey and Shaun George do battle at the Fox Theatre in Foxwoods Resort Casino. At stake are Matt “Too Smooth” Godfrey’s WBC United States cruiserweight championship and Shaun George’s North American Boxing Association (NABA) crown..
Godrey, currently ranked as the world’s 26th best cruiserweight by the WBC, and Shaun George, ranked 15th by the World Boxing Association (WBA), look to continue their assent in the cruiserweight division in a 12-round unification bout.
“This is a tremendous fight and one that should not be missed,” said Burchfield. “It is rare that two young fighters are willing to take this type of risk so early in their respective careers. Both of their teams must be commended as well as the promoters of the fight, Classic Entertainment & Sports (CES) and Donna Brooks of Hall of Fame Promotions, Inc.”
Godfrey, 11-0, 6 KO’s, the second alternate on the 2004 United States Olympic team, captured the WBC United States cruiserweight title (USNBC) in just his 9th professional fight with a unanimous 10-round win over Willie Herring. Shaun George, 11-0-2, 5 KO’s, a Brooklyn native and two-time NY Golden Gloves champion, became the NABA champion when he easily defeated world rated cruiserweight Chad Van Sickle.
“I’m extremely excited that I’ve been able to arrange this fight with Jimmy Burchfield of Classic Entertainment & Sports and to give Shaun George this opportunity to show his talents to the ESPN2 audience. I expect it to be a good, tough fight that the fans will all enjoy,” stated Donna Brooks, President of new-formed Hall of Fame Promotions, Inc., the promoter of George.
The bout May 10th is the co-main event on a seven bout event, “Put Up or Shut Up,” being promoted by Classic Entertainment & Sports, Inc. and televised nationally by ESPN2.
