Amir Khan: Hungry To KO Laszlo

05.04.06 – Boxing super-star Amir Khan will take on former European Lightweight title challenger Laszlo Komjathi at Belfast’s Kings Hall on May 20 in his seventh professional outing. The Olympic Silver Medallist, now unbeaten in six fights with five knockouts, has already KO’d Vitali Martynov and Jackson Williams in his first two fights of the year and now aims to make the Komjathi, the former Hungarian Lightweight Champion, his third early night.

Komjathi’s last fight was in January this year when he extended former World Amateur Champion Willy Blain over eight rounds.

The 30-year-old from Hajduhadhaza started off his career against John Bailey – a future title challenger of Ricky Hatton – and in his second fight he faced DeMarcus Corley who would later claim the WBO World Light-Welterweight crown.

He took Italian Stefano Zoff the distance for the European Lightweight title two years ago and more recently took Giuseppe Lauri – who Junior Witter takes on later this month for the European Light-Welterweight title – into the tenth round of their IBF Intercontinental title clash before he was stopped for only the second time in 35 fights..

The 19-year-old Bolton hot-shot believes Komjathi will provide him with another test and step-up that he needs in his career.

Khan said, “I can’t wait to get into Belfast, there’s a great buzz in the City about the whole show and with me making my debut there so I’m looking forward to getting in there with Komjathi and giving the fans a good and exciting performance,”

“Komjathi is a test for me and it’s at the right stage of my career, he’s had a lot more experience at championship level than the other boxers I’ve fought and has fought some good solid name like Lauri and Zoff and early in his career Corley,”

“I’ve watched some videos of him and he’s a strong, powerful, boxer with an attacking style so I know that I won’t have to go looking for him, I’ll be looking to bring him onto my punches and know that I’ve got the power to knock him out.”

Promoter Frank Warren said, “Komjathi has been in with some good fighters who have gone on to become world champions or high level operators at world level so this will represent another step up for Amir in his ring education.”
