04.05.06 – SHOWTIME will kick off the Cinco de Mayo weekend with the first of excellent back-to-back fight cards on Friday, May 5. In the main event on “ShoBox: The New Generation” (11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast), North American Boxing Association flyweight champion Cesar “El Gallito’’ Lopez (18-2, four KOs) defends against Glenn “The Filipino Bomber” Donaire (15-2-1, nine KOs). The vacant North American Boxing Organization 112-pound belt will also be on the line in the 12-round bout.
In the 10-round co-feature, undefeated super welterweight Juan Manuel Buendia (12-0, four KOs) collides with hard-hitting Alexis Division (16-2, 13 KOs).
CESAR LOPEZ (18-2, four KOs) 111 pounds
“I adapt in the ring. To stay in front of Donaire is a mistake. I don’t want to get caught with a right hand. I will be more cautious. I was ready for either brother (Nonito or Glenn); they’re both good fighters. I think Glenn will be one of the toughest fighters I’ve had. I’m ready to go the distance and work him.”
GLENN DONAIRE (15-2-1, nine KOs) 111.5 pounds
“The last few fights I wasn’t 100 percent into boxing. For this one, I focused as much as I could. I’m a hard puncher, and I knock out guys with my left and my right. I hit harder now. It’s not about how you win, it’s about how you perform. I’m really ready for this, I can’t wait.”
JUAN MANUEL BUENDIA (2-0, 4 KOs) 147.5 pounds
“I’ve dedicated myself to boxing. I’m no longer working another job. I’ve trained four weeks. I came to win. I don’t know how, but I will. I’m ready. No one fighter is better than another. It’s all luck. I feel my preparation will make me lucky. I don’t think Diviso’s height will give him the advantage; he’ll just fall harder.”
ALEXIS DIVISION (16-2, 13 KOs) 150 pounds
“I don’t feel any pressure. This is a good opportunity but it’s not a step up. I’m really not sure how good this guy is, I just plan on beating him. All I know about Buendia is that he’s undefeated until tomorrow.”
