Newark, NJ – May 5, 2006 – Main Events’s third installment of a series of planned boxing events in New Jersey, “Back to the Future III”, in North Bergen’s Schuetzen Park, will host an eight round bout versus 2000 Dominican Olympiad – Jerson Ravelo and opponent Ricardo Kellman. Ravelo, poised to win in veteran form, is looking to improve his record to 17 wins and one loss with a current total of seven 1st round KOs, two of which were attained in his last two bouts in March and April of this year..
Ravelo, described as “one of the better Olympic prospects from the class of 2000” by ShoBox commentator Steve Farhood, trains out of Joe Greer Boxing Academy in Patterson with New Jersey – based boxing coach, Nettles Nasir. Ravelo, sparring partner to Bernard Hopkins and Antonio Tarver has fought on HBO undercards of both Bernard Hopkins versus Keith Holmes and also on the Jamal McCline versus Shannon Briggs.
“I know I have the skills to be a world champion; anyone that sees me fight can see that. I have a strong work ethic. I’m always at the gym and never take a day off,” proclaims Ravelo.
As a child growing up in the Doña Ana sector of San Cristobal, Jerson Ravelo, dreamed about becoming a fighter. Reminiscing about his early days, Ravelo says, “My uncle used to put gloves on a lot of young kids in the neighborhood. We would spar and I would knock everyone out. I was the baddest kid on the block.” As an adult, and despite a few extended layoffs due to common boxing related injuries, Ravelo is focused on the sweet science and is knocking on the door of a potential title shot in the coming months.
Ravelo was the first 2000 Olympian to reach double digits in victories and has since been facing competitive fighters. Viewed as one of boxing’s brightest Olympic prospects, Jerson comes equipped with a numerous awards such as the 1998 Golden Glove Championship, the New Jersey Hall of Fame Amateur Boxer of the year title for 1998 and 1999, and a spot on the 2000 Dominican Olympic Boxing Team.
