Golden Boy puts his fist in Mayorga’s “Big Mouth”

09.05.06 – By Vanessa McConnell @ ringside, photos by CJ Cansler: It only took six rounds for ‘The Golden Boy,’ Oscar De La Hoya to knockout the mouthy Ricardo Mayorga. Mayorga pulled out all the stops to make this fight one of the most entertaining bouts in boxing history. Now next to Mike Tyson, he is even being called the “world second craziest fighter.” Not only did he shell out a ton of demands and insults before the fight, he ate every last work in the ring at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas Cinco de Mayo weekend. Holding up the press conference for hours because he was demanding $8 million and disrespecting De La Hoya’s family was only the beginning of Mayorga’s downfall, now he is the laughing stock of the boxing industry.

De La Hoya has put in enough work for boxing and for his fans so he can afford to walk away with his pride in tack; the toughest thing he has to decide right now is when to give his new baby cereal in the bottle. He has a choice to retire and continue to train his fighters and kick back with the Golden Boy Production Team on their rise to the top of the boxing food chain or he can sign up for more fights against boxers who have a point to prove..

De La Hoya have received quite a few challenges since his beat down on Mayorga, and considering the possible purse they could get for fighting De La Hoya they are coming out of the wood works. Right now Mayweather is screaming the loudest, he wants a piece of the Golden Boy next. All eyes are on GBP, who will be the ones who announce the final decision.

Mayorga is well noted for being a ‘motor mouth’ and will go down in history for being the ‘2006 ATM Machine of the Year’ for GBP. It all came to an end for Mayorga in the sixth round when De La Hoya put him on his back at 1:25. De La Hoya is proud to be taking his ninth world title home to his new baby, improving him to “38-4 with 30 knockouts,” according to GBP. This was also his “19th victory and 12th knockout in 23 champion fights,” and no one can be more proud of him right now than the GBP team and the fans. If De La Hoya would have lost this fight it would have been a terrible upset for boxing in general, but as we see with the Golden Boy that was not an issue.

GBP has an exciting night with one of the best line up of boxers GBP had to offer. In the prelim bouts junior middleweight star Kassim ‘The Dream’ Ouma won by split decision in 12 rounds against GBP’s Marco Antonio Rubio.

The junior lightweight Joan Guzman and junior welterweight Jorge Paez Jr. beat Javier Juaregui and Lowell Brownfeild. 2004 US Olympic Rock Allen won a 6 round decision over Juan Hernandez and Puerto Rican super bantamweight Jonathan Oquendo won a decision over Torrence Daniels in 8 rounds. GBP is proud of all their fighters who poured their soul into the fighting the best fight of their lives and they are all true winners.
