Kevin Mitchell Cashes In

07.06.06 – Super-featherweight star Kevin Mitchell is aiming to extend his unbeaten record to 20-0 on July 8 – and make the bookies pay the following day if England win the World Cup. Football nut Mitchell has placed a big bet on England to taste glory in Berlin on July 9, and says victory in Germany will be the perfect ending to a weekend in which he fights on the massive Millennium Stadium card in Cardiff..

“I know I’ll win on July 8, now it’s just down to the England boys to do the same,” said the flash 21-year-old.

“Before every major tournament our chances are talked up by the fans and the press, and it’s been the same this year. But I’d like to think we’ve got a great chance and between my training sessions, I’ll be taking time off to cheer on the lads.”

Mitchell is certainly in the loop when it comes to England, as he is close friends with hot-shot Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole, who has attended a number of his previous fights.

Cole couldn’t be present when Mitchell stopped Kirkor Kirkorov last month at York Hall as he successfully defended his IBF Intercontinental Super-Featherweight title for a second time.

And Kevin is also hoping he’ll be absent in Cardiff – as that will mean England are still in the World Cup.

“Whatever happens in Germany, it should be a fantastic night in Wales, and I’m really looking forward to fighting on such a massive card,” continued Mitchell.

“I headlined the bill for the first time in my last fight, and the buzz I got was unbelievable. It’s such a great experience to know the crowd have turned out just for you, and in the future I want to be topping the bill at places like the Millennium Stadium.”

Mitchell is poised to fight in an eight-round international contest in Cardiff on a show topped by Danny Williams’ Commonwealth heavyweight title defence against Matt Skelton.

There are six other title fights on the card, as well as the eighth professional appearance of Amir Khan.
