Joey Spina Promises Fireworks For Cape Cod Fight This Friday

05.07.06 – “He’s getting knocked out!” That’s what undefeated Super Middleweight Joey “The KO Kid” Spina, (18-0-1, 13 KO’s) had to say about his 12 round fight with Jay Pina (16-1, 14 KO’s), this Friday, July 7th at the beautiful Cape Cod Melody Tent in Hyannis, MA. At stake in the 12 round main event will be Spina’s WBC/USNBC Super Middleweight title and the Vacant IBF International Super Middleweight title this Friday, July 7th at the Cape Cod Melody Tent in Hyannis, MA.

Spina was last seen March 10th on ESPN2, stopping The Contender’s Jesse Brinkley in the 11th round. “I was happy with the win, but not my performance. I should have landed that body shot earlier. But, at the end of the day, I’m proud that I did something NOBODY on The Contender did; and that’s stop Jesse Brinkley.”

Spina, rated #17 in the world by the WBC, is back in RI with trainer and former WBA Light Heavyweight Champion, Eddie Mustafa Muhammad. Spina says he’s in better shape and feeling sharper than his last fight, “I had a good camp at the Top Rank Gym,” Spina said during a phone interview. “The heat in Las Vegas was an unbearable 115 degrees. I want to thank my conditioning coach Axel Marullo who’s done a great job getting me ready for this fight and the Brinkley fight.”

Trainer Eddie Mustafa Muhammad had this to say about his undefeated fighter: “Joe is in good condition. We boxed thirteen rounds our last day in the gym. Joey’s ready physically and mentally. Spina has raw power and if Pina decides to stand in front of him it will be an early night.”

“Our team is very pleased to have Joey back in the ring so quickly,” said co-manager Patrick Doljanin. “Albert Falcon (co-manager) and I promised Joey that we would keep him active and move him up the ladder.”

Falcon commented, “We are proud of the team we have put together. Jimmy Burchfield and CES have worked tirelessly to insure Joey stays active and that he is in fights that make sense for his career.”

“Let Freedom Ring” is the boxing event of the summer. Many boxing celebrities are scheduled to appear, including: 5-time World Champion and Comcast Analyst, Vinnie Paz; fan favorite, turned trainer, Mickey Ward will be working the corner of one of his fighters. Also making appearances are former World Champion, now popular trainer, Buddy McGirt; Olympic Gold Medalist and former champion, Howard Davis; and former WBA Light Heavyweight Champion Eddie Mustafa Muhammad will be in the corner of his young charge Joey “The KO Kid” Spina.
