PROVIDENCE (July 5, 2006) – Independence Day celebrations continue Friday night (July 7) as championship pro boxing returns to Cape Cod, headlined by the double championship match between Joey “KO Kid” Spina and local favorite Jay Pina, on “Let Freedom Ring” live at the Melody Tent in Hyannis (MA)..
The 12-round main event pits USNBC super middleweight champion Spina (18-0-1, 13 KOs), rated No. 17 by the World Boxing Council, against Pina (16-1, 12 KOs), from nearby Falmouth, for Spina’s USNBC belt as well as the vacant IBF International championship.
Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment & Sports, Inc. (CES), in association with Lincoln Park and Four Points Sheraton Hyannis Resort, is promoting “Let Freedom Ring,” which will be broadcast in New England on Saturday, July 8 at 7:00 PM/ET on CN8, The Comcast Network. The event will re-air network wide on Saturday, July 29 at 7:00 PM/ET. Replays will also be shown on Cox Sports Network at times to be announced. The broadcast announcers are blow-by-blow commentator Dave Bontempo, color analyst and five-time world champion Vinny Paz, and ringside reporter Phil Burton.
OFFICIAL WEIGH-IN THURSDAY NIGHT – OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
The official weigh-in for “Let It Ride” will be held Thursday, July 6 (7 PM) at the Four Point Sheraton Hilton Resort, 36 Scudder Avenue (next to the Cape Cod Melody Tent), Hyannis, MA. OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
Two-time Brazilian Olympian Agnaldo Nunes (15-1-1, 8 KOs) is in the eight-round co-feature against a new opponent, veteran Armando “El Policia” Cordoba (21-24-2, 16 KOs), former Panamanian and NABC super featherweight champion.
Nunes (15-1-1, 8 KOs) is coming off of notable win by 10-round decision against Adalberto Borquez (12-1). Agnaldo’s also beaten Raymundo Beltran (16-2). His lone loss was in his seventh fight to Eric “Mighty Mouse” Aiken (8-1), the newly crowned IBF featherweight champion, by six- round decision (58-54, 57-55, 56-55).
In a six-round Special Super Welterweight Attraction, WBC No. 16 rated super welterweight Ossie Duran (21-5-1, 9 KOs), fighting out of Providence via Ghana, takes on Gilberto “Sugar” Reyes (18-3-1, 11 KOs), born in Lawrence (MA). Duran is the former Commonwealth light middleweight and welterweight champion whose victims include British lightweight champion Jamie Moore (20-1). Reyes lost his WBA Fedecentro welterweight title in his last fight to world-class veteran Cosme Rivera.
Former world heavyweight title challenger Charles Shufford (20-6, 9 KOs) battles ex-International Boxing Federation cruiserweight champion Kelvin “Lil’ Tyson” Davis (21-4-1, 16 KOs) in a six-round Special Heavyweight Attraction.
Also on the card in a four-round bout is a newly signed CES fighter, and former Philadelphia amateur star, lightweight “Hammerin’” Hank Lundy, the former Philadelphia amateur star making his pro debut against Steve Thomas (0-2).
Unbeaten Irish middleweight Joe “Sugar” Rea (5-0, 4 KOs), now trained by popular “Irish” Micky Ward, faces Valentino Jalomo (2-0) in a four-round bout. Also making his pro debut is nine-time Irish National amateur champion “Irish” Billy Welsh, born in Cork, Ireland and now fighting out of Dorchester (MA), versus Shaun Hanson (0-2). All bouts and boxers are subject to change.
