12.11.06 – By Sean Ocampo: IBF/IBO Heavyweight Champion “Dr. Steel Hammer” Wladimir Klitschko successfully defended his title by winning a devastating technical knockout against previously unbeaten Calvin Brock at the world famous Madison Square Garden in New York City. Klistchko literally flattened Brock by sending him face first to the canvas. With the win, Klitschko has now defended his IBF title for the first time since winning it against Chris Byrd earlier this year..
Both fighters imposed their respective strategies but it was Klitschko’s strategy of staying in middle of the ring and popping his long jab proved to be more effective. Klitschko was patient in throwing his devastating weapon which is his right hand.
Brock had his moments in the fight by effectively frustrating Klitschko in the 3rd and 4th round respectively. He threw effective body shots inside and kept tying-up the taller and longer Klitschko to take away Klitschko’s jab.
Klistchko made adjustments in the 5th round by moving around and sticking his jab to Brock. Klitschko started to pull away starting the 6th round but sustained a cut above his left eye during the round due to accidental headbutt. He nailed Brock with good jab-straight combination that made Brock’s knees buckle. That was the beginning of the end for Brock’s unbeaten streak; Klitschko took advantage of the hurting Calvin Brock by unleashing vicious punches. He finally sent Brock crashing down the canvas face first with a powerful right hand to Brock’s jaw.
The challenger showed tremendous heart by getting up after the devastating right hand from Klitschko. However, he was still on rubbery legs when he got up prompting referee Wayne Kelly to call a halt to the fight to avoid further damage to Brock.
Overall, Klitschko had another so-so performance with the disposal of Brock. He sent another message to the Heavyweight division with this win. He is slowly proving the boxing world that he’s the best heavyweight out there.
