Stevens, Stark, Mcgirt Victorious at the Manhattan Center

15.12.06- By Matt Yanofsky {ringside}- In front of a standing room only crowd at the Manhattan Center, Light Heavyweight Curtis Stevens 15-1 {12 KO’s} scored a second round knockout over tough veteran Jonathan Corn 47-16-2 {26 KO’s}. Stevens dominated the first round by landing big shots but was not able to drop the game veteran. In the second round, Stevens continued to throw heavy punches. Stevens was able to drop Corn with a huge left hook.. After Corn made it to his feet, Stevens proceeded to land huge blows staggering Corn and forcing him to the ropes. Referee Eddie Claudio saw enough and called a halt to the bout at 2:34 of round two.

Middleweight James “Buddy” Mcgirt Jr 13-0 {7 KO’s} was able to make his father/trainer Buddy Mcgirt Sr proud by defeating veteran Dennis Sharpe 17-4-3 {4 KO’s}. Mcgirt used superior boxing ability and ring generalship to earn an eight unanimous decision. All three judges scored the bout 79-71.

Gary “Kid” Stark 18-0 {8 KO’s} was able to win the New York State Featherweight Title by defeating Vernie Torres 27-8 {15 KO’s}. Stark and Torres fought a very exciting ten round contest. Stark was able to land many huge blows on through out the entire fight but did not drop the game Torres. After of many of Stark’s blows, Torres signaled for more and proceeded to fight back. Stark was able to control the entire fight and earn a unanimous decision. All three judges scored the contest 100-89.

Cruiserweight Shaun George 13-1-2 {6 KO’s} destroyed Roosevelt Johnson 5-9-1 {1 KO}. George came out throwing bombs and was able to connect on many of his attempts. George dropped Johnson with a right to the body. Johnson was able to make it back to his feet but was a victim of another big body shot just seconds later. This time Johnson did not make it back to his feet. Referee Eddie Claudio counted Johnson out at 2:41 of the first round.

Featherweight Maureen Shea 8-0 {4 KO’s} earned a TKO victory over Rocio Vazquez 6-5 {1 KO}. Shea used her ability out boxed Vazquez while featuring superior defensive movement in the first. In the second, Shea was able to land some big punches hurting Vazquez who appeared to be saved by the bell. Shea finished the fight in the third by landing big punches which went unanswered. Referee Sparkle Lee called the fight off 56 seconds into round three.

Bantamweight Robert Semidei won a competitive and fast paced four round unanimous decision against Harvey Phillips 0-1. All three judges scored the bout 40-36.

In a battle of fighters making their professional debut, Welterweight Tolan Tascoe 1-0 was able to recover from a second round knockdown and earn a close unanimous decision over Esubio Flores 0-1. All three judges scored the bout 39-37 for Tascoe.

In the evenings first bout, Patrick Majewski 2-0 {2 KO’s} scored a second round TKO over Ken Dunham 1-2 {1 KO}. Majewski dropped Dunham in round one and twice in round two forcing referee Eddie Claudio to stop the bout at 2:34 of round two.

The crowd featured many current and former fighters, including several featured on Brickcityboxing.com . The list included Emile Griffith, Junior Jones, Paulie Malignaggi, Vivian Harris, Elvir Muriqi, Jerson Ravelo, and Wayne Johnson.
